How the heck do you install fonts in X windows? I cannot figure out in either KDE nor GNOME....it's really such a shame that changing FONTS has to be such a PITA....

Any help would be great (I searched google and found three poorly written methods, none of which worked, only one of which was even CLOSE to looking like it would).

For the record I have RH 8.0 running.

8 allows you to now create a font directory called .fonts (or it may be created during the install) and put your fonts in there.

If you were running as root put your fonts in /root/.fonts
the system will autodetect them and make them available for your usage.

Oh hey very nice!
Thanks a bunch man!

But would it KILL them to put info like this anywhere you could actually find it?

My biggest gripe about Linux is EVERYTHING I want to do I have to go track down somebody else who knows....as where with windows if I keep clicking around it's bound to be there somewhere....

Oh yeah that and I HATE incorrect HOWTO's....three apps I have downloaded already today were released with HOWTO's that were just plain WRONG!

Anyway, thanks again for the info!

Ack I almost forgot!
Any clue why Mozilla doesn't pick up on these new fonts?
Perhaps I just need to restart X?

In mozilla, try :
edit > preferences > appearance > fonts > allow docutemnts to use other fonts.

Ya, I know what ya mean. During my first failed attempt at running Linux (failed to due ancient/pathetic/nonfunctioning hardware), nothing I wanted to do was terribly difficult (like your problem with the fonts), but finding out how to do it was a PAIN!

Yeah right up until the time either nobody answers you, or they start getting bitching (dont go into a newb channel unless you want to hear newb questions).

Eh, it was worth a shot. Do other applications take advantage of the fonts?

Yup, but as usual the one application who's fonts I have a gripe with doesnt understand it....

My LAST real hurdle here is getting antialiased trutype fonts, as much time as I spend browsing I just cannot justify the NOTIVEABLE gap in quality.

That and I went to install Freetype utils and it failed, now I cannot install any packages....and kopete just decided to stop connecting, it just sits there trying forever....

*sigh*

I remember why I don't use Linux as a desktop OS now....

Well, for the record, the way I get kick-a$$ antialiased truetype fonts was I installed the Xft version of Mozilla.
Only problem was it kept saying that it required 1.0.1-26 to be installed....except it WAS installed....

So in the end I just --forced it and said the heck with it, loaded up Mozilla, and wham, auto set to TTF fonts right outta windows, Anti-Aliasing was already on.

For the record if you want the Xft version of Mozilla on their FTP goto nightly builds -> Experimental -> Xft and download the newest RPM's there.

You will need four, the psm, nsrp and nss packages plus the mozilla package. the chat and mail packages are also available if you want AA trutype fonts in those apps as well.

I love how easy it is to corrupt the RPM database in RH8....one failed RPM and blamo I had to go back through and rebuild everything.

But hey, now I have antialiased fonts ALL over, a kick-a$$ IM client (kopete), now if only I didn't have to recompile the kernel to get the ability to mount an NTFS partition....which is where all my MP3's are.

Anyone got any pointers on that?
