On this package

Sent a 3rd Day letter within the city, normally these just go to the local hub then to the destination - this time they took it several hundred miles off route to Memphis. :)

It's because it's 3rd Day - if they sent it through the local hub to the destination it'd get there in one day. (Err rather sit in the truck and then have irate people like one of the douches here who yelled at them because his package sat in the truck for a day because the package arrived to the hub early) All 3rd day goes through the main hub in Memphis before going to it's destination.

but now what is the problem w/ it getting there a day or 2 early..... you know.... it *might* make customers happy..... from the place that I am at right now I can ship a package UPS Ground instead of overnight and still have it be in Ft. Wayne IN the next day... I'm like 3 hours from ft. Wayne.....

AZGamer, as long as FedEx keeps this up, I'll be a happy person, I own UPS stock :D

Seriously though, I've never understood why FedEx does that, here in NYC almost every single package or letter I've sent through UPS Ground still make it w/i the 5 boroughs the next day, not by 11AM, but still, next day delivery at ground prices, gotta love that :)

If Fedex is able to get a package to its destination faster than what was paid for, then the customer may realize that they can get more service for less money.

Why pay $10 for next day, when they can send the same item for $5 and it is handled the same as the $10 item.

UPS is better. My dad is a driver for them and said that when RPS was bought out by FedEx, the ground drivers still had to rent out their own trucks, repair their trucks when they broke, and had to find replacements for themselves when they wanted to quit/ go on vacation. Thats tough.

There is a problem with this though. Using this experience as an example, Fedex may make $10 off of me one time, but i won't use them again because of poor service. Now UPS will be getting my $5 for overnight shipping(UPS ground through NYC) for a lifetime(lets say 30 packages).

What would you rather have?

$10 overnight within the same city once
$150 ground within the same city 30 times.

The argument though is that by not shipping it faster, the customer will not realize that they overpaid.
If the customer stills pays $10 per item for next day and does not realize that UPS will deliver for $5 by accident, then FedEx has not lost.

Does UPS delivers for $5 by accident or intentionally according to their rate structure?

intentionally

they have a map available on their website that will tell you how long it takes to ship a ground package to areas in the country... close area's they list as 1 day

the difference is that there is no guarantee for 1 day, only for 5 days.

Unusual at best.

I ordered something from Newegg took 2 days for the first two items and its taking 5 (business days) for the last one even though I ordered them at the same time all with Fedex saver shipping. The package due to be delivered tomorrow has a note on the website saying "not due for delivery" go figure.

oh, you think that's bad?

i KNOW that title companies (people that handle property deeds) FedEx express overnight letters (about $14 last time I checked) across town all the time. I define across town as: get in car, drive 5 miles over a bridge. Total elapsed time: 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. Hell, for $14 I'll do the delivery.
