Getting your car washed could become a whole new and unusual experience if a planned business opens up in Memphis. Neighbors say topless and car wash do not go together. Working at the car wash could take on a whole new meaning if such a business opens. Suzette and Crump is where the topless car wash is supposed to be going. It is in an area zoned light industrial. But on the next street there are homes and even a church. And everyone we talked with said they had no idea about the plans for this space.
The sign is up-- T & A Gentlemen's Car Wash and Lounge. An ad in The Flyer reads "coming soon." The only topless car wash around -- Totally and Acceptable. That's what the T & A apparently stands for. It is to say, the least, a unique concept. An area resident said, "Topless Car Wash, that's what it's supposed to be a topless car wash no no ..Oh you like for real." Action News Five knocked on the door and no one answered. A look through the mail slot doesn't seem to reveal any car wash -- there's just some type of construction going on.
We talked with people in the area who say they had no idea anything was planned for the business, much less a topless car wash. "It's kind of funny you say, it's going to be, I wouldn't want it around me cause it going to be nothing but trouble, be back there naked I mean half naked." One woman, who, didn't want to give her name, has lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years. She had trouble believing what we were telling her, so she decided to take a look for herself. When we got to the front of the building, she only had this to say. "I have no idea."
City School board president Carl Johnson, is renovating a building behind the car wash. He plans to teach young people how to do carpentry here. He wasn't aware of plans for the topless car wash. "What you're telling me is all news to me." Johnson wanted to know if the business has a permit. Code enforcement says no one has applied for one and the business may be too close to residential to open as a topless anything.
Action News Five called the number listed on the sign and in the ad several times but no one returned our calls. People working inside the business say it is scheduled to open in about a month. We'll let you know if that happens.
