Hegemonia: Legions of Iron

I have it and the expansion pack.

Tried it, couldn't get into it. Tried harder, couldn't get into it.

It's gathering dust on my DVD rack.

I had it years ago, not long after release. IIRC every time I tried to play it I'd run into game-breaking bugs. Hopefully they got fixed eventually.

I played it for a week. Got the disc dirt cheap from Gamestop or someplace. It was kinda sorta fun. As I recall the gameplay was like a cheap ripoff of Homeworld and Nexus, but not nearly as polished or refined.

In fact now that I think about it, I believe during the tutorial my ships kept getting massacred by the enemy each and every time.
When a games tutorial is impossible then you know they didnt put much effort into it. Shame cuz it was made by a small indie group and I want so badly to love them.

This.

I wanted to like it, a lot, because it was very pretty for it's time (oooh, specular highlights and normal mapping!), but it was very slow-paced and kind of boring. IIRC, the interface wasn't nearly as refind as Homeworld's, either.

Had it. Beat it.

It wasn't a truly awful game, but it wasn't an exceptional one either. There were a lot of very annoying things about it - how necessary spies were to get the most of your research.

The the missed potential - they had working beams, cannons and flak-like effects. However, no ship could mount more then 1 type of these weapons, and you basically only get the dull cannons unless you spy like crazy.

And the plot....forgettable at best.

I remember finishing the awesome Homeworld and wanting more, so I looked into this game. Got the demo and it seemed crappy.

It's a shame that the genre kind of died off after Nexus: The Jupiter Incident or Homeworld 2 (whichever was last, I can't remember)

At least we got 4 solid games out of it...

Imperium Galactic II was released around the same time as Hegemonia and was much better. It was also a great lan party game. I own both Hegemonia and IG2 so I have experence with both.
