HEELLLLP!! CRAZY JOB OFFER DILEMMA!! $80K or $45K

I am currently working as a consultant for company A and being paid $45K per year.
However, I am a QA programmer. Something I don't enjoy but am satisfied with.

I just got a job offer at company B for $45K but as a developer. This is something I've always wanted to do. Usually, in NY, they pay more, but I might want to sacrifice it for $45K to be entry level developer.

However, Company A just found out that I'm leaving them and made a counteroffer! They offered to keep me on for $80K. This doesn't include whatever bonus and benefits they offer. The only problem is, I'd have to stay in QA.

So I'm left with a crazy hard decision, do I take A or B? Sidenote, I have to pay a $5K penalty fee for leaving my consulting company, which makes my new salary 40K if I take job B.

LOVE OR MONEY??!??

Love. Money is nice but if you hate your job you will want to poke out your eyeballs.

Stay at the 80k job. You'll have more freedom later in life to do exactly what you want, but for now, work there until you can become established.

can you even live in NY on $40K?

once i graduated college, i worked in NY for less than $20k. it's possible, though not desirable.

in any event, is there any room for growth in the position that pays $80k? or do they expect to keep you in QA forever? i'd try to negotiate a deal. obviously, you're not set on what to do at this point -- but if you're unhappy with your job as a developer, you're stuck with $35k less than you had before. for that reason, i'd do the $80k deal and try to look for growth potential in the company.

He didn't say he hated it. 80K is very tempting IMO. Plus if you go with the other company it'll take you a while to get the kind of salary job A is offering you.

But, if you enjoy what you'll do at job B, and you can afford to take a salary decrease, go for it.

Edit: I like Demon-Xanth's idea!

With that extra 40 grand, you can have a fun that the other job wouldn't offer.

Stay with a the current job, and treat yourself to something kick ass.

Like new Motorcycle (something I want right now ::), a new PC, a new laptop, a HDTV? I dunno man, a lot can be bought with that extra cash!

tough call. while doing what you love is nice, but are you willing to give up 35k (not including penalty fee)? 35k can make up for boredom at work by giving you a much better life outside of work.

80K w/o a doubt.

What is love without money?

Besides in 5 years, you never know what could happen to developers in NYC, they may all be outsourced!

to me, more money to spend outside of my job is more important than enjoying the hours i am at my job

others may not view it the same way

80k for now, get established, save up some coin man..don't be dumb. After you've saved up some money you can be free to take a less paying job on the career path that you want to do, and sitll live comfortably

80k now, you get to put that on your resume, and use it as a bargaining chip in the future.

80K

and it sets you up to make a whole lot more when you want to leave

say you stay there for 2-3 more years making 80K

when you decide to leave companies will offer you much more based on your current salary

developer is overrated. You going to get bore with it in a year or 2. 80K is much nicer.
