I just got a soyo P4X400 dragon lite mobo and have a problem with the sound. The onboard sound locks up the system with certain applications so I got an Aopen cobra Aw-850 sound card and now it locks up with all apps any ideas out there

If there is a setting in your BIOS like PnP Aware OS - set it to whatever setting means for NON PnP Aware OS.
Then shuffle the ECSD and hope for the best. See Adrian's Rojak Pot if you don't understand the BIOS references.

I did all that and no change. Also I removed the sound card and disabled the onboard sound now it never locks up but I got no sound. Just a thought, the sound card has the same chip set as the mobo could that be a problem

Kind of odd that you are having the problem at all though... for kicks, update your system bios, and go to windows update and download all the latest junk. If it's still going on, try uninstalling the sound drivers, and reinstalling - or maybe use windows default drivers... Just a few thoughts.

Thanks for the advise. I did everything. then I tried a generic modem / sound adaptor it is a conextent with riptide sound and game port XP recognized it and installed the drivers and now problem solved. I believe that the aopen card I tried, because it had the same chipset and drivers as mobo is why it didnt work. I got the card out of an old HP I had as backup and put the new one in the HP now both work fine
