Hedgehog, PAL6035 with the Adda 16.1 dBA fan, modded Taisol 742, or other? *Update: going with the Taisol* :)

Looking for the most efficient/quiet hs/fan combo to go on my newly ordered MSI K7T-Turbo board. I'm going to assume that this board has the same layout as the Pro2a, that is, the Taisol 742 will need to be modded to fit on the board. Need to decide on a new hs/fan to use, since i'm probably going to upgrade to a 900 or so T-bird at the same time, and in no way trust a Chrome Orb for this faster running chip, much less giving me some headroom for a speed upgrade later. So, here's what i'm looking for, in order of importance...

1. Quiet.
2. Cooling efficiency.
3. Ease of use (no modding necessary, easy on/off, etc.)
4. Price.

Your thoughts, and perhaps links to good retailers for your choice?

For your limited space, Hedgehog or Pal6035 would be best like you said. Id pair it off with a little stronger fan, 16db is nice but you can go up at 22db and really hear no different between those 2 up to that point. Check my site out on alot of 60mm fan specs:

Right now plycon is having a sale on hedgehog heatsinks for 30 bucks bare sink. For further cooling on both of these sinks you can attach a 60mm to 80mm shroud adapter, its something to think about will increase quietness and efficencey, don't get in the way of use of taking on and off cost ya about 10 bucks, or you can easily make your own for like just a buck.

The thing with the Hedgehog is that you're probably going to have to lap it so that it will perform decently. Also, the bonding between the fins and the base isn't all that.

Even a poor hedgehog still performs better then a PAL6035 (probably equal too), im sure he will probably get an avg one. They have been building those sinks for a while now they probably have gotten better with there manufactoring. I would have recommended the PEP66 this heatsink the design of this heatsink is perfect when using a low CFM fan. Cause of its low air restrictions within the sink itself, air is sucked right over the base sinks. Thats the one thing i hate about the PAL hedgehog type heatsinks...they tend to sucked up air under the skirt through the outer pins of the sink..and the center pins where the core is really get a little airflow passing it compared to the outer, and also the center is where the motor so ya kinda got a dead spot in the sink. The center fins are the most important ones too as they will get the hotest.

Gizzo,

NOt necessarily. A revision 2 Pal6035 with the revised clip can outperform a poorly made hedgehog.

ITs gotta be pretty close tho right?...does the hedgehog use a 20Lb clip yet? What new about the about the second version alpha just a higher tension clip too meet AMD specs and feet now optional? Wonder if anyone carries the new clip maybe slap that on the hedgehog.

keep it coming guys.... like i said, cost is my least concern (within reason), so i'm not afraid to drop some $$$ for my cooling choice.... and if the concensus is that a 'well-made' hedgehog is the best choice, esp. when teamed up with an appropriate fan, any links to where i can lay my hands on a top-quality 'hog? Plus, any guidance on whether or not the extra-quiet Adda and similar fans will do okay paired with the 'hog?

a lot of folks are reccomending the hedgehog these days , it scores at or near the top of almost every HSF review ive seen. the one thing that spooks me about this HSF is its weight(475g) ugh! thats heavy! the AMD approved max is 300g. any thoughts on this anyone?

Gizzo,

Definately. But then again, with a 16.1dba fan, that difference may grow.
(its all about the revision2 clip, it is much improved over the old one).

Conlan,

I only think its a major concern if you move your case around a lot. I haven't seen or heard about any stories where the heatsink has popped off.

Material of construction is ony half the ingredients, if even that much, in the quality of the heatsink. Improperly welded copper (or any other material ) has signifcantly higher thermal resistivity than pure, unadluterated copper. I've looked a couple of hedgehogs up close at acomputer fair and the welds suck! Definite problem. I don't know why they didn't go for a solid molded design...well, I know...but I think they were stupid. One mold for these badboys would cost anywhere from about 100,000 to maybe 300,000 dollars per mold. And each injection mold machine would cost about a million dollars.

Design aside...alpha's, taisol's are manufactured much, much better. I have an alpha PAL6035 w/ sanyo denki fan...definetly quieter than my PS which is now the loudest component in my system.

I'm seriously thinking about buying one of those volcano's so I can get that 31dba 34cfm fan...I find those numbers hard to believe.

Actually I'm curious in more reviews on the Volcano II's... I know Anandtech hasnt covered one, but hardCOREware.net had a raving review on them. Super-quiet, but high cooling (not quite hedgehog level, but still!).

I'm mostly concerned with noise, because my current system sounds like a Hoover vacuum cleaner (5 fans). But then again, I don't want something that will fry my chip when i push the new duron 700 to the 1GHz level...

Any thoughts on the Volcano II vs. TaiSol? (the one suggested by Anandtech)

i don't know yet... i'll probably have the board in my hands tomorrow, i'll give a full report on the board setup then.... if the Taisol 742 fits, i'm probably just going to go with that - seems like the most well rounded cooling solution out there...

i've been told by what i consider a fairly reliable source (Compuwiz of o/c cpu fame) that the K7T-Turbo has plenty of space around the socket, so i'm going to give the Taisol742 the nod... thanks for the input all :)
