Heavy Wifi Use Disconnects?

When using wifi on my laptop at home, it usually stays connected just fine when browsing websites & such. However, when I do any kind of heavy operation, like download or upload a large file from my SMB file server, there's about a 30-40% chance that Wifi will disconnect, taking around 60-120 seconds to reconnect and acquire an IP. This is in windows. I haven't had a chance to try other laptops, or my laptop with other routers.

Is this common? Is there a way to configure the connection to not drop?

When it actually drops the connection it's very disruptive for the things I'm doing. I'd prefer windows to pretend the connection was still active while retrying, even for 240 seconds or more.

seriously, and i do mean this, just go to ebay and find a $15 internal wifi adapter and replace the one inside your laptop. this will likely solve your problem. intel 5100's can be had for $7 in fact

i just say this because i have seen it so many times. it can also be your router, but it can be hard to isolate this problem sometimes and the cheapest part is your internal wifi adapter (and normally the stock ones are extremely cheap)
