Heavenly Sword demo coming this Thursday

Confirmed for the UK and Sony says the demo should hit other territories around the same time. If not, just make a UK account and you can download from there to get it earlier.

EDIT: Confirmed by SCEA that this demo is hitting the US store this week.

Blog from developer:

So, things to try out are:

- Experiment with stance switching. Nariko can instantly switch between stances using the shoulder buttons. Your standard stance is the Speed Stance, L1 pressed and held is the Ranged Stance and R1 pressed and held is the Power Stance. You?ll find the various enemies react differently to each stance, meaning you?ll need to find different tactics to defeat them with style.

- Once you?ve mastered the basic attacks, it's time to try some advanced stuff. Wait for an enemy to attack and hit TRIANGLE to counter their strike. This relies on careful timing but, if you get it just right, you?ll deliver a killing blow to your attacker.

- By this time, you should have some Superstyle built up. Look at the HUD element in the top left: the inner dial is your Superstyle bar. Whenever one or more of the gems light up, you have access to a variety of Superstyles that can wipe out dozens (and in later levels, literally hundreds) of opponents in one devastating blow. These moves are stance specific so, at each level, you have a Speed, Power and Ranged Superstyle. Activate these using CIRCLE while in the stance of your choice. Obviously the more gems highlighted, the bigger and more devastating the Superstyle!

- Got that nailed? Sweet! Now try using L1+TRIANGLE on someone who's staggered - they'll fly up into the air. If you?re quick enough, jerk the pad up and Nariko will launch into an aerial combo. Try SQUARE + SQUARE + SQUARE to start with but don?t forget that other combos are shown in the pause menu.

- On that note, Nariko only has a handful of moves available in the demo, with tonnes more to unlock during the full game. Some of these moves have a little broken shield icon which signifies that this is a Block Breaker move - use these to break down enemy defenses.

Hopefully, this?ll give you a good place to start for now. Let me know how you get on - I?d love to hear what you find cool! Over the next few weeks, I?ll try and reveal more of the techniques and tactics you can use in the demo and final game.

One final sneaky tip: don?t kill the axeman during the opening hero sequence (i.e. miss the final SQUARE press) as you slide down the ropes. This?ll give you a chance to see what it?s like fighting a tougher character!

Seems like it has a pretty sophisticated combat system.

I'm ready to try that baby out. I already have accounts based in the US, Japan, HK, and the UK... so I'm ready to go.

You need to make an Australian account too so you can download music videos 🙂

I think this is the first time I've been jealous to not have a PS3. Let us know how the game is...it certainly looks interesting from previews I've watched.

Nah, NGS was more painful to miss out on than this.

I agree...I would have liked to see NGS on the 360...but since I'd already experienced a lot of it on the original Xbox...it didn't have the pull it might have had otherwise.

The irony is that Heavenly Sword was originally developed for Xbox, but MS scrapped it. Sony then picked the project up and you know the rest.

Here is a clip of what could have been.

I haven't kept up much with this game, but from what I've seen, it looks to be another rehash in the style of Dynasty Warriors. Am I basically right, or is there a bit more to this game?

I've never played Dynasty Warriors, so I can't comment on that, but this game should have some of the best cinematics in a game thus far. Andy Serkis!

Most people think it's closer to God of War... thus the nickname Goddess of War that you'll sometimes see used in reference to Heavenly Sword. I have seen the comparison to Dynasty Warriors before though. I think that comes from the clips/screenshots showing large scale battles with hundreds of enemies. Personally, from what I've seen, I think it will be closer to God of War. Either way, I'm excited to finally get to play a demo and see for myself.

I'm pretty sure that the only similarity between Heavenly Sword and the Dynasty series is the fact that they are both action/hack and slash games. However, the Dynasty series requires, like always, little to no thinking and you destroy hundreds upon hundreds of enemies.

However, many reviews stated that you can't just hack away with the Heavenly Sword fighting system, but instead you have to be careful to block and perform well timed combinations. Perhaps it is like God of War with a bit of Ninja Gaiden's caution added. Also, you can't just destroy hundreds upon hundreds of enemies. Yes, you are in large scale battles, but it is more than the mind-numbingly stupid stupid button mashing that is Dynasty Warriors. At least, I hope so.

From GameInformer

Heavenly Sword is far from a simple button-masher, and juggling these styles [Speed, Power, Range] is at the core of its calculated combat.

To sum it up, I think your opinion of the game is a little off.

Who said I had ever had an opinion? Besides, doesn't really sound like you know exactly what the gameplay will be like, either. This is one of the games that I just don't much of anything about that has been getting a lot of hype. I am wondering if it truely will be a fantastic game likes it's being hyped up to be, or if everyone is only getting excited because it's the first good-looking PS3 title in quite some time.

A good thing to wonder. We won't know for sure until the game comes out, but I hope it is at least decent.

man, I really can't wait. Thursday is only 2 days away please come faster!!!

arg, I hope amazon has those buy 3, get 1 free deal again for PS3. that was a good deal for people wanting to get the latest games and get all of them at once. I did that for the GC.

Looks like fun but really its nothing more than a better looking God of War with new moves, story and the main character is a girl. I'd say thats part of the reasoning for using a girl as the main character because alot more ppl would label it more like GoW. Really they could have used Kratos changed the story and slapped GoW III on it.

Now I have to wait 2-3 years to play it when the PS3 is at a more realistic price. The 360 is on my first to buy list.
