hello.

Ok, i'm going to build a rig around a spare Duron 850, and a spare GF2 MX (original flavor) I have lying around, with the notion of upgrading maybe a year down the road. (the only games i'll probably be playing is WarIII when that comes out, so I don't need all that processing power for a FPS).

Now my question is: I have a spare FOP 38 with a delta on it. I know that hs/f is good since i took it off my t-bird 850 o/c to around 950. However, that sucker is kind of loud. Don't really want to drop big bucks though so I checked out the scene and found this.

SVC GC21

It's rated for an athlon xp 1800+, I was wondering if that would perform better than the fop. More importantly would that $5 heatsink make a better cooler (overclock) than the fop. I've already unlocked the duron with conductive pen, and hoping to at *least* run it at 133 fsb.

Also, would that same heatsink cool that athlon t-bird I mention earlier (i gave the t-bird to my little bro and he couldn't stand the fop). If (big if) I decide to upgrade his rig first, I'm going to take that t-bird (I know I can get it to a 1 ghz with a proper mobo) out and put it in my rig.

Next question:
I have a tube of arctic silver 1 (original flavor) lying around. Should I break down and buy a tube of alumina or AS III. Is it that much better? that site (linked above) sells alumina for about $3 dollars, ASII for $4, and ASIII $6.

Next question:
Ram heat spreaders? necessary?

I was going to suggest simply getting a quieter fan, but then I saw the price on that cooler, now I'm not so sure ('course 21dB Panaflos can be had for under $3 at bgmicro). I can't comment on which would be the better cooler.

It's claimed that AS1 is the lowest performer among their products, but from evaluations I've seen, the diffeferce is not worth springing for a new tube. OTOH, it's claimed that Alumina has a much, much greater life on the CPU than AS1 (which I've heard is a little as 3-4 mo <am I the only one that finds that unacceptable?> ), so that may be a major factor to consider.

Heat spreaders are rarely necessary, but never hurt.

Good luck!

How about getting This

its a 60m heatsink with a 80mm fan, do a search and you will find threads with people getting good results.

Or what about This One

same thing but you get a faster fan (48.5cfm compared to 30cfm) with the extra 30cfm, thats 2 fans with the hsf.
