heatsink tab snapped off -- am I screwed?

I have a 8K3A which is a Socket A mobo. I was removing a heatsink, which has a strap that only secures to the middle tab, and one tab snapped completely off. I guess I could always buy a different heatsink that uses all three tabs, in the hopes that the other two could hold it properly, but I was wondering if there is anything else I can do. Is there a way to replace the socket itself?

You are now stuck with finding a 3 tab hold down. replaceing the socket is not really possible.

Vantec AeroFlow I've been using one on my P4 and just bought the AMD model for my 2100+ and it's the easiest AMD cooler to install I've ever used and I've used many of them. Just slip one side over the lugs and use the lever to push down and in and it'll snug right on and viola' you are done. It's less than 29$ shipped fedex 3day, cools fantastically, looks great, and you'll never have a problem mounting your cooler again :)

Your other option is a bolt-on heatsink if you have the 2 mounting holes on either side of the socket. (4 total). Those heat sinks are high end.
Try a Taisol with a 3 slot clip if you don't wanna bolt or the other suggestion...vantec.

Wow, that sure sucks. I hope mine does't do that with this stupid Volcano 7.

Macro, what are some of the bolt-on heatsinks?

Looks like your board does have the holes, the 8K3A+ is listed on Alpha's 8045 compatability page. Still a fan of bolt ons, 8045 is working out quite nicely for me and has outlived 3 cpu upgrades.

With 2 pristine lugs though I wouldn't have any worries about going with a 3 hole clip. Can pick up a SK6 over at SVC for like 13 bucks.

Edit - see you asked about bolt ons.
Alpha 8045 and it's cousin the 8942
Thermalright SLK-800 and 900
And the Switchtech 462

There are 5 to get you started. Some of the newer ones are also compatabile with the P4 retaining mechanism if that's something that might appeal to you for the future. The bolt ons tend to be pricier, also tend to be higher end sinks. SLK-900 is a beast. SK6 is still a nice choice though, mostly depends on your CPU/cooling needs and what changes in approach you want to take with this incident...er, opportunity...as far as noise and such.

McCarthy has it.

Check svc.com

You're gonna end up at $40 or more with a bolt on but it will cool very well.

I like the SLK-800-U w/80mm fan. But the others are all good.

This happens when you dont get the clip on to the socket lug far enough to be in the little grove right next to the socket.

My 8K3A+ worked great with the Alpha Pal8045. It is a very good HS. I even out a 92mm fan on mine and it works the same only much quieter. You can get one Here for $35 and put on a nice little 80mm fan. If you are not overclocking a bunch you coule probably get a slow and quiet panaflo or the like. If you get this HS make sure you set the fan to suck from the HS and not blow into it. The fins are so dense that it actually works better that way.
