Someone was helping me with a screw that wasn't budging and ended up scratching the lower part of the heatsink. This is to the side, though, but a pretty big scratch. If it's not around the area where the die would be (old school amds so no cover), will it matter? Can it affect temps?

If it's not on the die, then it shouldn't adversely affect it.

If you're worried about it, you could probably sand/lap (Whatever you want to call it) out with some patience, just make sure you get a really good finish if you do, almost polished.

Personally, if you do sand/lap it, and you struggle to get a polished effect, toothpaste on paper after cleaning that up, a bit o' brasso :D

Re.Polishing the HS base. http://www.overclockers.com/tips458/

Another question comes to mind. Why introduce Brasso, toothpaste, Mother's or any
other substance besides TIM to the base or CPU.

After lapping I rub AS5 into the base with a coffee filter(no lint). Buff it with a clean spot
on the filter. Then install as per AS5 instructions.

AS5 is used because I have too much of it. Zalman, ThermalRight, CoolerMaster Premium
and several others are VG TIM.

I only said if you struggle, I've only ever had to do the toothpaste trick once, and seeing as I don't have a lot of cleaning things around, it had to do, worked surprisingly well, to be honest.

I guess I'll just try and see and what happens if I install it with the way it is now if you guys think it may not have an affect. I know where the temps should be so I guess I'll just do something about if the temps are being affected

I can't remember, but OC Forum, HardOC or maybe Bleeding Edge did a test, with and w/o
polishing. Polishing after lapping increased temps 0.5C on average.

The point is there is NO benefit in polishing. Looks good when review sites show a mirror
base in pics. It makes for a perfect Kodak moment :D Nothing more.
