Hey guys,

Sorry for posting in here, but I need to get some help asap and the other forum doesn't get very much traffic.

I just got in my zalman heatpipe for my visiontek ti4600. I have the card out, removed the two (spring loaded) pins along with the 3 small screws that hold the fan onto the heatsink...

The problem:

How do I get the heatsink off of the card? I guess I could jerk it off, but that would likely damage the gpu. I've tried using dental floss, by running it under the heatsink hoping to cut through the epoxy or paste that is holding it on... I haven't had any luck with that route.

Per a google search, I have it sitting in the freezer for a few minutes. Hopefully that will help to free it, but I doubt it.

Any ideas?

Glued on w/epoxy, I suppose you can TWIST not PULL, this should be no problem as long as you twist since epoxy tears very easily. gl should be simple, did the same thing onm my video card.

Yeh, I tried the twist method and it didn't work too well. I can probably be more firm with my twist but I've never done this before so I would like to avoid breaking it.. haha.

The freezer trick didn't work for me. I have it back in the system now, I'll give it another try this weekend.

Keep the suggestions coming everyone.

Is this the Nvidia reference heatsink or the Blue Orb? Mine had the Blue Orb, and I froze it, then used a flatheaded screwdriver to pop it off. With the screwdriver, put a piece of cardboard under the screwdriver, then TWIST the screwdriver blade to pop the heatsink off.

It does say nvidia on the heatsink, the heatsink itself is silver with a thin metal plate over the top of it, the fan is small and black.

I'll try the screwdriver trick along with a deep freeze and hopefully that'll get it off.

How do I clean off the remaining epoxy once I do get the heatsink off? What type of cleaning solution can I use?

Use acetone or fragrance-free nail polish remover (has acetone in it) with a rag and some elbow grease for removing leftovers. I use denatured or >90% isopropyl/rubbing alcohol for detailed removal. Try to use it outside or where it's well ventilated though. Goof-off is good but I think it has oils in it that will cause problems with thermal grease in the crevices of the heatsink/chip.

You may try using a blow dryer to heat the heatsink up enough to remove it. Once it gets hot enough, try to twist it off or CAREFULLY pop it off with a screwdriver.

Legal Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for any damage you cause to your vid card but that's what I would do if I were in your situation.

Mine has this heatsink, but is obviously a Ti4600, not a 4200.
Mine had the same heatsink MDE. I chickened out and never removed the cooler. When the fan failed I just put a new one in. :)
I'll have to try to get a pic of what I replaced mine with (after wasting money on the Thermaltake copper hairdryer).
