Heatsink re-install

I have an Athlon XP 1800, Retail box.

I had to take off the heatsink, to re-seat the chip. I notice that the thermal compound that was on the heatsink has partially melted.
Can I put the heatsink back on anyway? If not, what's the recommended procedure to prepare the chip and heatsink surfaces before re-installing?

That compound is usually only good for the first installation. I'd say remove that compound with lighter fluid, buy some artic silver 2, 3, or some kind of thermal compound and apply that to the core. If you just reinstall the heat sink as is right now you may run the risk of frying it.

I don't have any arctic silver, just some generic thermal grease, but I'm following the arctic silver instructions. Got the goo off the heatsink with mineral spirits - what fun. Same stuff is stuck around the edges of the chip - I may have to get some "goof off", as I'm afraid to use anything too nasty on the chip (like the mineral spirits). Now I have to go out and get some pure isopropyl for a final clean! I don't have any arctic silver, just some generic thermal grease. I'm assuming it will be OK, as I'm not going to OC anyway..

This whole procedure really sux, but I guess this is one place not to take chances.
