I have an extra Zalman VF-700 ALCU and was thinking of letting it sit on top of the back of my video card.

Will this short out any circuits or do anything bad?

It would short something for sure, there are small pieces on the back of the card that could be shorted..

Who told you it would reduce your temp by 20?

Oh, you mean flip it so that the coils are at the back of the card? Sorry I wasn't clear on what you meant.

do you mean your just going to set it on the card? It would probably work if you could find an some o rings to elevate it off the back. Probably much better if you get something like those antec spot cool fans though.

No, you can't mount the HR-03 on either side of the card. You can mount the HR-03 so that the entire mass is on the GPU core's side or so that the larger part wraps around the top of the card and sits over the back-side. When you mount it the wrap-around way, none of it actually touches the back video card.

The only back-side coolers I know of are the Thermalright HR-11 and the EVGA Akimbo cooler (comes with a back-side sink).

Then that HR-11 is a lot riskier than appears.

Those metal pieces shouldn't really be touching metal..... or everyone is just worring about nothing.

Its not risky its designed to sit there, its been tested, just go ahead and mount your Zalman on the back of your card along with the Stock heatsink and have fun you tit.

You asked if it would cause any problems and people answered you correctly and you are'nt listening so enjoy making your expensive paperwieght.

Wait, so resting my Zalman on the back of my card is dangerous...

I get that. No problem. I won't do it....

yet having the HR-11 is not because they tested it?.... Sure. They have that plastic film there to protect you....

The HR-11 has a thick thermal pad on it to keep it from crushing / making contact with the little chips on the back of the card. Even the back-side piece that comes with the EVGA Akimbo has this thick thermal pad on it.

It's like LGA775 backplates with thick rubbery glue/insulation, except now it's used to conduct heat too. See HR-11 and the little thing that comes with the IFX-14.
