heatsink mounting questions

QueBert

I bought a new Athlon 64 MB today and was putting my Thermaltake Beetle heatsink in. The instructions that came with it show it being mounted directly on the MB without the plastic bracket thing + some springs that come with it. To see if their web site had a better install guide I checked, and it shows it being using the plastic brackets, and not the springs.

Went to the local PCClub, tech didn't really know if it makes a difference one way or the other.

Since this is a big, heavy sink, I'm not going to chance it, do I need the bracket around the cpu slot or not?

I'm terribly sorry, but I'm not familiar with your mobo / CPU setup. But I do have some experience with installing some heavy HSF's on mobos. I just have one question--will it fit one way or the other? Or will it only go one way. I have 2 63 gram heat sinks, plus the fans, so my mobo is holding up around 130 grams by its lonesome. I also have the springs for mounting, but I decided to go with the standard plastic mount (Xeon's, not 64's). Hopefully this will help you out. Good luck.
Tas.
