After reading the overclockers review of the Tuniq Tower 120, and how much it weighed, I wondered how much the other coolers weighed. I figured the Tuniq was the champ of weight, but I was wrong. The Zalman 7700Cu takes that title, unless someone can show me another, more massive heatsink. Since I looked at only a few samples, there may well be a more massive retail heatsink available.

918 grams : Zalman 7700Cu
789 grams : Tuniq Tower 120
690 grams : Thermalright XP-90c
665 grams : Scythe Ninja SCNJ-1000
600 grams : Zalman 7700Al-Cu
530 grams : Zalman CNPS9500
525 grams : Thermalright HR-01
400 grams : Thermalright SI-120
370 grams : Thermalright XP-120
360 grams : Thermalright XP-90

This leads me to the question: Will we cross the 1kg barrier soon?

Remember, those sinks don't include the weight of the fan. When I had the TR 900U installed, I mounted an Evercool 92mm fan with a solid aluminum frame.

Lets get honest here.

The 7700Cu has a fan. Does the Tuniq Tower have a fan at 789g? A 120 fan is
atleast 110g if not more.

We do have to consider torque louding too. The Zalman is not as tall as most of the
other SUMO Class HSs. :D

I have a XP-90C, so I did do some reading about weight considerations.

I didn't get a grams weight for the largest that I weighed, with fan, the Extreme Volcano 12:

Thermaltake's Silent Boost weighs 17 Oz
Cooler Master's Aero 4 Lite is pretty heavy at 19 Oz (545 Gr)
The greatest moose I had was the Extreme Volcano 12, at 25 1/2 Oz

I have an XP 90, the aluminum one, but it didn't have a fan on it when I wrote down these several ones' weights (doesn't have a fan on it yet -- I don't have the A-64 that it will be used on, not yet).

Of course they would...if it lowered thier temperatures a degree or two.

The Cooler Master Hyper 6 weighs in at 998g (35.2 oz) not including fans or mounting hardware.

Be better if the industry could just build a better HSF with less weight. In an ideal world anyway. Growing them larger isnt a viable solution methinks.

it's not always the weight, but the torque. then 9500 is more dangerous than the 7700 because it is much taller.
