Heatsink glue required?

You have to have some sort of thermal compound between the HS and CPU, be it thermal paste, a thermal pad, etc.

You want "grease" not "glue"/adhesive if it's a CPU and the heatsink doesn't have a pad pre-attached (intel retail does).

Some heatsinks ship with a tiny tube of thermal grease, others you have to buy it separately.

I have never put anything between my CPU's and the heatsink. Never a problem.

You are incredibly lucky at best. It's quite probable all your heatsinks came with a thermal pad.

If not, I cannot believe you didn't fry your CPU.

The only CPU I didn't put thermal compound on was a celeron 466, and in retrospect I question that.

If they come with a thermal pad I take it off and make sure it is a shiny smooth metal to metal contact which is best.

I have documented 4 PC's , 2 Intel, 2 AMD running in 150 degree attic with no problems for an entire summer. Verified by active AT members.
