Heatsink for Athlon 64?

Ok I know there really aren't many options out there, but what would be the best relatively inexpensive cooler for the 754 socket. Many people have recommended the Zalman, but for some reason I just am not too fond of it. Thermalright seems to make a really nice heatsink, but I really don't want to spend that much. What about the Silent Boost? How does it cool compared to the stock fan? I was getting 30-32C at idle with the stock cooler, but I returned my retail box cpu and got a 3400 oem on the way so I am going to need a heatsink. Am I missing any of them?

I put up some pics of my Alpha PAL8150 here if you want to look it over. I see people getting lower temps using the stock retail heatsink, although I'm using a pretty quiet fan on this. Anyway, I like it fine... looks nice. Pic of it installed on a K8V Deluxe I got it from Newegg, I think they're around $28.

I almost went with the Alpha, but my local shop didn't have any in stock. I went ahead and got the Silent Boost because I won't be overclocking much anyways. I figure I can always change the fan if it doesn't cool well enough...the actual heatsink itself looks pretty nice. It was only $24 before tax so the price was definitely right.

Should I see an improvement over the stock cooler with the Silent Boost?

Bigger picture: with an A64, does it really matter? 😀 It's not like they're showing much need for radical cooling or anything.

heh...very true....but it's always nice to know your processor is running nice and cool. 😀

So are you saying I should use the stock heatsink for my athlon 64 2800+? i'm running out of money for my first build over here. Stock or something more expensive?

use stock, esp if you are not OCing

AMD stock is fine.
There's just something about an ever-so-slight whirr of air--and still getting 40C or less load temps--that's just satisfying, in a geeky kinda way 🙂.
