Heatsink fitment on a Lian Li V1000 V1100

I have my eye on a Lian Li V1000 and I want to take advantage of the free shipping offer that newegg has, but there's one thing about the case that I'm worried about...

I plan on upgrading to a 64-bit in a few months and have noticed that a lot of the 64-bit motherboards have the cpu socket rather close to the top of the motherboard. Seeing as the top of the motherboard is mounted against a corner, that leaves little room for a heatsink. Either a Zalman 7000 or 7700 would be ideal if they fit, but I wanted to know what you guys are using to see what my options are.

I realize that I could get a motherboard where the cpu socket is farther in on the board, but there are few of these and that would drastically limit my options. Thanks for any help.

I'm not having any issue with CPU placement and my XP-120 inside my V1100 case...

You have one of the motherboards where the CPU socket is far enough away so it isn't a problem. Also, it's a MSI board. I've tried MSI before and my first time it took three RMA's to get a working board. That was the last time and I vowed never to buy another MSI product again (they're an ugly red too. yuck.).

This is one of the boards in question: here

I've never had a problem with Asus boards, so I'd like to stick with them, but it looks like they all have the same CPU placement. That placement looks a little too close to the top of the board.

This one looks ok, but it's not my first choice: here

Actually, the current S939 and S754 boards are not red. They are a sort of dark dark, dark green, sort of like brackish water.

The Asus A8V is an excellent board. I have one but I use my K8N Neo2 instead because the K8N Neo2 seems to give me better performance overall. I have no experience with Abit boards.

I've had nothing but crap luck with Asus boards, making ME swear to never use one again. I started using MSI boards with the Athlon64's, not before. The boards I've been using have been getting rave reviews all over the place, which is why I have gone with them. Of all the MSI boards I've used to date, not a single one has given me any issue. Plus, with the long warranty period (3 years) I'm not worried about using them. As far as the board color, who gives a damn? I don't look inside my rig often enough to care. Nor do I go for window side panels, so board color matters even less.

Did you have that board in your V1000 at all, and if so, what heatsink where you using? Like I said earlier, I'd really like to use one fo the Zalman heatsinks, but even the 7000 looks like it might just barely not fit.

Anyone else have experience with Asus or similar boards (with the CPU socket so close to the top) in the V series cases?

I'm not planning on getting a window for it, but as sad as this sounds... I'm pretty anal about a lot of things, even if I'm the only one who sees it.

Nope. I only ran the A8V Deluxe in a CoolerMaster WaveMaster case, and I was using the FX-53 RETAIL HSF. Then I switched over to the (Thermaltake) A1772 HSF which uses an all-copper HS and a different fan. Thermaltake makes the Retail HSFs' supplied with several of the AMD Retail processors.

BTW I migrated all the parts over to the V1000 about New Years Day. I just ordered a (Thermalright) XP-90 and a 92mm Panaflo fan for better noise/cooling efficiency ratio. This combo is supposed to kick-ass cooling-wise and fits no problem on the K8N Neo2 in the V1000-size and larger V-series cases.

NOTE: The V1000 is a fairly noisy case, as the mesh screen design allows a large amount of noise bleed-through.The XP-90 and slower spinning, 92mm Panaflo are more efficient so they should quiet my PC down a little. We shall see.

EDIT: Installed my new XP-90 and 92mm Panaflo FBA09A12L1BX (42.7CFM, 2100RPM@27dBA) 3 days ago with AS Ceramique. The Panaflo L1B is run off of the 3-pin CPU header on the mobo, since I like to use MSI "Smart Fan". I also have a 120mm Vantec Stealth (53CFM, 1500@28dBA) intake and the stock rear ADDA 120mm 72CFM, 1800RPM@34.4dBA turned down to 50% initially, then increasing to 75% at 40C, then to 100% at 45C. MUCH QUIETER UNDER LOAD. Plus, I lost approximately 20C over the stock (retail) HSF! Awesome!

I like to use Halo to stress my videocard and warm up the CPU, as I have found that this heats up the CPU much more than Prime95. I figure this is due in large part to my X800 XT PE, as the card is fast enough to give the CPU a good workout. I am running a VERY mild OC (206x12=2472Mhz). 1.525V CPU. Memory is 206Mhz@ 2.7V.

My Halo Load temps are: 47-48C CPU, 34C Case, and 20C Northbridge. This is with a the lowest CFM 92mm Panaflo L1B, so I'm pretty impressed with my new HSF combo. My Prime95 Load Temps are: 37-38C CPU and 30C Case. ROOM AMBIENT 72F during testing.

Yeah... I kinda figured it'd be a loud case, but I it will be quieter than what I have now (4 80mm Sunon Extreme Output), and I don't really care for the design of the 1100. I can't justify the extra money either.

My roommate at school just ordered the Asus A8V Deluxe and a Zamlan 7000 for his Cheiftec Dragon, so when I get my case I'll test fit it. If it doesn't fit, then I guess it's the MSI board...

Thanks for all your help.

Sure. Hope everything works out on your system.
