my friend told me to get the Alpha Pal 8045U, but i read the reviews and it says that this is for the serious overclocker

i am not going to overclock, i am running an XP1700 on an IWill XP333 board

what is the right heatsink for me? I just need my chip to not explode, i don't need supercooling.

I didn't want to spend $53 for the 8045u either

what is a good hsf for a good price?

I haven't read any posts indicating anyone was ever arrested for installing a better-grade heatsink, even for running at spec cpu speeds.

I've read many posts indicating that projected cpu life expectancy is longer with lower cpu operating temperatures. Why would this not be true even for non-overclocked cpus?

I happen to run my XP1600 game-stable at 148MHz FSB with max loaded cpu temp of 41C with Alpha 8045U. Runs at 38C loaded with 133MHz FSB.

The $50 I spent for the 8045U allows me to run my XP1600 at speeds comparable to the more expensive XP1800 cpu.

I don't feel like I'm a bad person for over-clocking. I don't feel that it was foolish to spend $50 for the better heatsink.

And I certainly don't intend this as a criticism of you.

You have a great cpu/board combination. Spending $50 for the Alpha 8045U would probably enable that combo to run at XP2000 speeds - if you wished to do so.

Hope this helps!

You may want to consider getting an Alpha 8045 without a fan then getting a very quiet fan like a Panaflo L1A or a Pabst. You will have very good cooling with very little noise.

If you haven't purchased the chip yet, the retail HSF works just fine for the non-overclocker. It even works fine for mild OCing. My XP is running one speed grade up, using the retail HSF (with the thermal pad), and it's 48C at 100% load for hours. Certainly not the coolest, but not particularly hot either. Also, it comes with a nice 3 year warranty.

thanks for the replies, i did already get the XP1700 OEM, so i can't use the retail hsf. I think i might get the Alpha PAL 8045T, the one that comes without the fan and thermal paste because my friend has plenty of both.

this will save me some $$ and get me the best cooling around

thanks guys

volcano5 or Volcano 7. there is also another option. I use the sk-6 with the fan off the volcano2, which is extreamly quiet and but still keeps it very cool. Just some sugestions.

If you dont want to overclock almost any HSF will suffice. (note the "almost") I recommend the SVC GC68. It is very cheap, uses an 80mm fan for quietness, and offers respectable cooling. You cant go wrong!

the alpha vultures are out

like SWScorch said... most hsf will do the job... i reccommend staying away from anything that says volcano (it's a no no ;))
but geeze... $50 is too much if you don't need it

look at the under $30 crowd
SVC GC68
Vantecs (the 6035)
Cooler Masters
Taisols

Definitely give the SVC GC68 a try. It's only $12.98 or so, and you can use a nice and quiet 80mm fan with it. Consider it the budget alternative to the Alpha PAL8045...

I just got a Speeze Superrock HS and fan for $12 ($18 w/S&H from NewEgg) - I am using it on my wife's 700Mhz Duron but so far I'm happy with it - I am doing a bit of OCing but its running fairly cool so far. I was actually thinking of getting another one for my Athlon 1.2Ghz running the retail HS.

Here's another vote for the svc gc68. I went from a volcano 6cu+ to this, and it's the difference between night and day. My power supply is louder than the stock fan on the gc68, and the psu is pretty darn quiet. I picked up the gc68 from case-mod.com, came with free artic alumina too...
