I have an Abit KT7A with a 1.2 gig Tbird being shipped to me. They are bundled with a Silver Orb. They'll be going into an Antex sx830 case. I had originally not planned to overclock, but after lurking here awhile I'm asking myself why not.

I am not looking for a huge wallop of extra speed and in fact the noise factor is really more important to me than the speed. But I thought I should be able to get up to around 1.3 gigs without requiring super extraordinary efforts.

From everything I've read, I gather that the Silver Orb will be only an adequate solution for running at 1.2 and probably inadequate for overclocking. I was thinking of ordering the Alpha 6035 w/Delta grill and some Arctic Silver from KD Computers (here).

Bearing in mind that I'm more concerned about noise than speed, does this sound like a good solution? Any other suggestions (hopefully as good but less $$$$)? Or is the Silver Orb good enough?

I've never tried assembling a PC before, much less overclocking, and I'd appreciate very much any advice.

i would highly reccommend against the alpha/delta setup then, you're not going to like the noise from that monster. the taisol would be a good solution, and the artic silver is great. i personally wouldn't reccommend any of the orbs for any 1.2 tbird system, but you're not going to be OC'ing much anyway- you're already at the bottleneck.

Thanks very much for the advice. I did read after I posted that the fan I mentioned is a big noisy thing. I will look into a taisol.

I wanted to wait a few weeks before I built, after I would have a better chance to educate myself, and prices and availability will be so much better, but I'm facing surgery very soon with several weeks convalesence, so it's build this weekend and next or spend the time recuperating still using my old PII 300. She' been a warhorse, but she's bit long in the tooth at this point.

Thanks again.

oh i'm sorry to hear about that, but i suppose recuperating with a 1.2 tbird is better then nothing at all :)

good luck, in everything =)
