Heatsink/cooler compatibility between 423 478 603/4????

I am building a dual Xeon box and am appalled at the noise level of Intel's stock fans that ship with the Xeon. I want to swap them out, preferably along with the heatsink, but can't find aftermarket Socket 603 products.

Will socket 478 heatsinks work in the retention mechanism for the Socket 603? How about Socket 423 products. I can't seem to find a definitive guide to dimensional specs for each to compare them myself.

I am using a Tyan mobo, S2668ANR. This mobo has the procs mounted parallel to each other, making space a little tight.

Any help in identifying a solution would be greatly appreciated!

Intel's own datasheets would be a "definitive" guide to the dimensions. 🙂 Freely available on their site.

What a surprise, searching Google for "socket 603 heatsink" returns lots of pages. It seems they're at least close enough that many can be used on 603 and 478.

Yes, that search yields lots of results. However most of the references are for the heatsink included with boxed Xeons from Intel, and others are for boutique heatsinks that are either expensive or unavailable.

I am interested in using a product I can find at a local retail store for socket 478 heatsinks. Intel's documentation is difficult to parse because they often do not publish dimensions for the heatsink retention areas, instead the dimensions are of the socket itself.
