Heatpipes and inverted motherboards

Hiya,

I recently purchased an Asus Maximus Formula. When the board arrived it got me thinking it might not work optimally in my case. I have an Enermax Blue Viper where the motherboard is inverted, and installed upside-down. I vaguely seem to remember that there had been issues in the past with heatpipe technology and inverted motherboards due to the heatpipes not working. Is this still an issue today? Or has the heatpipe technology improved so much that it doesn't matter much for efficiency whether the motherboard is installed upside-down?

Anyone have experience with this or other insights on the matter?

Thanks in advance. 🙂

Nope, after huge argument threads we had on this it has been stated proper.

The heatpipe wick will always travel where it means to, so it will not do the "hot air rise" thing in a heatpipe. You should be fine

Don't worry about the orientation of the heat pipe. They have wicks inside, or other mechanisms (capillary action along ridged walls), to carry the working fluid toward the source of heat. Clever huh! I had the same concerns before someone pointed me toward a good site which explained how heatpipes work.

Ah! That's good news. Thank you BassBomb and Replay. 🙂

I too have read a site about the working of heatpipes before, but I also regulary came across messages from people on forums who had received replies from ASUS that they discouraged hanging the boards upside-down in cases.

Thanks again.
