Heatpipes: 3X8mm or 4X6mm?

Not sure if there has been a comparison on which is more effective since both have a 24mm area of contact with the cpu. Anyone seen info on this?

well since the top tier coolers like the NH-D14 and megahalems both have 6 im thinking 6 is better than 3.

Well with 8mm, you can only get 3 pipes to fit on the cpu with a direct touch type cooler whereas with non touch 6mm pipes you can get 5 to 6 pipes onto a base and that seems to have better performance.

just get the D14 as desktop cpu's have reached their maximum TDP's pretty much. i doubt any more chips coming in the next five (ten?) years on the desktop platform should saturate that D14.

By then you won't be able to buy a socket adapter kit for it anyway. Let's all hope that chips continue to get cooler rather than staying the same as well. I'd love to be able to get away with something as small as the Intel stock heatsink, even when overclocked. 🙂

Noctua is actually really good about making sure you have the current adapters. Simply drop them an e-mail and your hardware is drop-shipped pretty much. Did I mention that its free shipping too?
