So i'm not really sure what's going on. I just built this comp yesterday and it seems to me that the heat is way high for the heatsink im using (tuniq tower 120 with arctic cermique). Anyone have any ideas?

I'm using a thermaltake armor case and the motherboard is a msi platinum sli.

edit: forgot to mention this is just idling. Full load is

cpu:48
cpu1:68
cpu2:68
cpu3:63
cpu4:63

no one has any suggestions? I was under the impression the core temps should be in the 30s for idling for the tt120

I have my Q6600 running at 3 Ghz right now, but I ran it at stock up until today. I also use Everest Ultimate to watch the temps of the CPU during idle and load (found it to be just as accurate as speedfan). My idle and load temps were very similar to yours, with my Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme. I do not think you have anything to worry about.

You sure you got the ceramique applied correctly, and all that?

Yeah I just now reseated it and cleaned it to make sure it was nice and even and the arctic was on there perfectly. I clocked it back to stock 2400 and i've been running prime95 for about 45 min and the temps maxed out at 72/72/68/68. isn't this still high, especially for 2400?

fans fans fans..

On my new build, I tried rearranging the fan setup a few times...changing where the intakes and exhausts were, and I ended up dropping 10C on the temps when I got it right.

I recommend you experiment with the fan directions and see what works.

Definitely high.
A couple of things to check. Make sure that the screw posts on the Tuniq are equally tight. The tuniq is a heavy sucker and the weight could be dragging down and causing unequal tension on the heat sink. You might try laying the case on its side and see if that has an effect on temps. Some have run guys from the Tuniq to the case to equalize loads.

How to post a link: link from the OP. Oh, and welcome to anandtech. And yeah, your temps are too high, especially for a Tuniq Tower. You obviously don't have it seated all the way, or you're giving it too much vcore.

edit: Your idle temps are okay, just not your load temps.

Thanks for the responses guys. As far as case cooling cause I have a 120mm fan in the front that sucks air in and a 120mm fan that blows it out the back and a90mm right above the back fan. There's also a 90mm fan sucking it out the top.

As for seating the tt..i've reseated it twice and it looks like it's fine. Any advice on how I can be positive? I would say i'm positive but my load temps are insane.

I'm in the same boat as you Wes, my Q6000 w/Tuniq Tower is also running very hot. At 3ghz with a mobo setting of 1.2925 vcore(which is sagging to 1.2 under load) I'm maxing out at a hot but bearable 65C. This is inside an Antec P182 (and sitting on a Gigabyte P35-DS3R mobo) so the cooling is already pretty good, all I can do is install a front fan. My Tuniq is definitely sitting correctly, so it just has to be a hot chip. I'm comfortable with where it is(as long as I don't put it in a non-AC room, at least), but this is still anoying.

Puts on flame suit and.......

Quad core run hot!
If you want to cool down your chips use water.

Try having the top fan blow instead of suck. That reminds me:

Have you seen the crappy HSF Intel ships with these CPU's ?

I think people obsess too much about temps...

Sure, make sure your HSF is installed properly; and if your IHS temp ( Tcase )
is less that 60 ( Quad ) , you are in good shape.

Not sure the Intel HSF will keep you there at 3.6g , but plenty of
aftermarket units will ..

yeah, I don't see why they even ship the quads with a hsf. It only costs intel and us money. How many people build their own Q6xxx system and say "you know, I don't really care about overclocking, heat, noise, or my computer at all. I think I'll just use the included hsf." Maybe intel owns stock in fedex or ups.
