heat spreaders for ram

Unforgiven

Golden Member
im just curious how well these work and if there is really any benefit to using heat spreaders to dissipate heat on sticks of ram? does anyone have any information on how much the temperature varies with and without the head spreader on? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

you might as well open your case and blow on your ram while its running. it will have the same effect, and it wont set you back $$$

Indeed they are worthless. In fact some RAM manufacturers will void your warranty if you install it on their product that doesnt come with it stock.

Good one. That's the best answer to that question I've ever heard.

Yeah... but I think it makes it look a little better. In the amount of money you find a way to cool your RAM better, you can probably just go out and buy new RAM that will run at that speed stock...

Same thing.....not really that beneficial. It certainly won't hurt, but you shouldn't need them, especially at stock speeds.

Get some Type-R stickers for the RAM instead 😉

However the cold cathode tubes do help lower case temps by sending out streams of chilled photonic particles.

Principle is nice, you would be better off putting heatsinks on your voltage regulators as they do get hot...🙂

Heatspreaders allow the manufacturers to hide the type of ram chips on the PCB. This is the primary reason they are used.

I forgot about that but that seems logical too. I wonder why they would do that... people that really carry what chips they got are probably going to OC in which case they OC to the max, not the reccomended OC or something, hehe.

I knew it!!!

I was at the store the other day and the guy said if I put the $100 ones then my temps would drop as much money I spent on them. He said the more expensive they got, the more chilled particles they sent off... I'm gonna go buy some more!

The idea is that the "spreaders" even out the heat caused by the ram so that you can get that nice even warm feeling.

If you put an 80mm fan over your ram with or without the spreaders on, it will probably help more with cooling the ram
than just using a couple of spreaders.

unless you are going for looks too 🙂

lets just put it this way... i wouldn't take them off memory that came with them, but i wouldn't put them on memory that didn't come with them.

my hyper-X looks sweet, I am keeping the factory heat spreaders on there.
