Heat Sink Confusion...

Hi all....

Up till now I read a whole heap of heat sink reviews, but I'm still not really decided which one to take. I don't know which dBA values mean that the HS is too noisy and which are ok... Moreover I have to face the problem that I'm living in Austria and it's nearly impossible to get some HS over here...
I found that the Cooler Master HHC-001 is quite good, but I think it's VERy noisy. What about the Thermaltake Vulcano 7+? Is this one quite ok?
The CPU I'm intending to use ranges about Athlon XP 2000+ to 2200+...

Thanx very much!!

Hi finr, welcome to the Forums :)

I will use 80mm fans for an example. The quietest ones are about 12dB, the loudest ones are about 55dB, and most people who want a quiet computer are happy with fans 24dB or lower. To cool a 2000+ using a 24dB fan, it will probably need to be an 80mm fan, not 60mm. A 60mm fan that is 24dB probably won't move enough air. And that is the problem with the Volcano 7+ and the HHC-001, they use 60mm fans.

Can you get any good heatsinks that use an 80mm fan? Alpha PAL8045, Thermalright AX-7, Thermalright SLK800 would all work with a low-noise 80mm fan. Also, the 2200+ has a small core because it is the Thoroughbred core, and a heatsink with a copper base is recommended for them.

I see that the HHC-001 makes 45dB of noise. Its noise will also have a high frequency because the fan is small and turns at a high RPM. People say the Volcano 7+ is loud even when it is slowed down to its lowest speed, too. I hope you can find something quieter. :)

Hey Finr,
take a look at http://www.toppreise.ch. Maybe those stores also sell to Austria (cuz I live in Switzerland ;)) Or if you decided which heatsink you buy, you can tell me that and I could order it for you, and send it then to you :). Mach ich doch gerne für nen Östereichischen Kollegen ;)

Well I would get a Alpha PAL 8045 with a Papst 8412NGL Fan. That fan is only 12dba loud, you CAN'T hear it, I have 2 of them running and I really can't hear them. The Alpha PAL 8045, I ordered at http://www.phamcomputer.com and from http://www.frozen-silicon.de I got the Papst Fan. It IS kinda expensive but I'm tellin' you, that is one of the quietest Heatsink/Fan Combo you can run.

Sei gegrüsst ;)

Thanks very much to you both, you really shed some light for me on those things :).

@ndee: I could get an Alpha PAL8045 for ~ ?45, and a "Papst 8412NGL Lüfter, 80x80x25, 1500rpm, 33m³/h, 12dB(A), Sintec-Gleitlager" for ?15. I heard some reviews that the Alpha PAL is hard to fit on some boards - I'm considering the Asus A7V333, A7V8X and the Epox 8K5A2+. Do you have any experience if it will fit on there? (The measurements for the Epox can be found here, don't know about the others though :/.)

Thanx again!

Hey finr, those prices seem about right. I paid about the same prices for the Alpha PAL8045 and the Papst fan. And yeah, it's the 12dBA fan. Here's a compatibilty list of the Heatsink:http://www.alphanovatech.com/mb_inf_pal8045e.html

If you order the motherboard, just ask if there are 4 holes on the motherboard to mount a fan. They should actually have the info. As for the Epox, I know there are 4 mount holes for the heatsink, but I don't know if it really fits.

Hope that helps.

What I try and do is find a high performance heatsink then settle for less performance, using a quiet fan.
Actually "quiet" is all in the ears of the listener. Some people can live with a 40dBA just fine, while others can't tolerate a 27dBA fan. I pretty much need something under 30dBA.

Perfectly said Blain. Just like the old Pontiac Commercials that wider is better, bigger is better on the Heatsink but no need for loud High speed fans. Life's to short for uneccessary noise or paying $30 for a HSF combo when $4 will do. <<< (New HEAT related cottage Industry in PC sector of Industry will not like seeing that)

The Epox 8K5A2+ does not appear on the compatability list! I too have selected this mb and had almost zeroed in on the Alpha PAL 8045. But it would seem that they are not compatible. Has anybody used this combination successfully?
