Heat Q's

OK, I got strange things going on and would like some input from you cooling people. I'll skip alot of the details and troubleshooting I've done and try go get to the point.

Heat here in Minnesota is sucking. We average < like 6 days a year over 90-degrees. We are currently on our like 25th day above that. Most of us don't have AC cause we don't need it. My apartment is at 98-degrees right now. (3rd floor in a building, heat rises and all...)

Since this heat has started, my computer has been weird. Athlon 1.33, Globalwin CAK38 HSF, 2 front SUNON fans, two rear SUNON fans, Antec 400 PS (replaced with Enermax 430 thinking that could be it), W2K, etc. Running at 1.55MHZ but down to 1.33 since the problems started.

What's happening ranges from spontaneous reboots - can be after 10 hours, 1 hour, 2 minutes or even during a boot. No error messages sometimes, other times it can be a BSOD with errors ranging from NTFS errors, generic NTOSKRNL errors, etc. Sometimes during bootup I can just get a simple error saying c:\winnt\system32\config\system is missing or invalid. Sometimes it was an error saying I had a corrupt registry. Sometimes it boots normally but will reboot or BSOD 5 minutes to 12 hours later.

Booting off my W2K CD and even trying to do a repair (thinking I had something corrupt) could lockup doing the drive scan or just lockup during boot. Trying to reinstall can lockup sometimes. I DO 😀 always have backups!

I had many things happening in a row that made me think I have a drive problem so I wiped my boot drive and reinstalled the OS. Nothing installed now except W2K and SP2 and it'll sit now idle for hours then just reboot.

Anyway, any ideas? Could this be heat? Normally my ambient temp is about 24-degrees, CPU at about 36-degrees and around 42-43 under load. Since this head shyt started, my CPU is about 48-49 without load and ambient around 38-39. I'm planning on not doing anything further until the heat breaks (tomorrow supposedly) and see if that fixes things.

Yeah, just leave it underclocked (or default) with the voltage turned down a bit maybe, if its stable like that. You are probably looking at a 10-15C raise in ambient, which is just being added to what you use to run.

And remember a fan will only move hot air around. It works to cool us humans because we employ active cooling(sweat). If its really bad then turn it off and go to the pool or a lake and enjoy the sunshine.......😀

Hey! I can't help much, but I just finished building my first PC! and I'm in MN too! How cool is that? Anyway, i have the same heat problem, no AC. It's terrible in a place where -20's are right around the corner.... just terrible..
