Just built: Intel D945PSN, Intel 820 cpu using stock heatsink/fan. Since I wasn't going to be doing any OC'ing, figured should be ok. Put in new SonataII case.

With side case cover off, Bios reported at bootup about 50C. After installing XP & Intel's temp prog, the intel prog reported around 59-65C. Ran for several hours, 65C was about the high.

Flashed bios to latest, bios actually reports about 10C higher now, but intel's windows prog still reported around about the same.

The SonataII comes with a rear case 120mm fan, so I ordered & installed the front case 120mmFan (rear fan blow9ing air out, front fan sucking air in.) I also removed mobo, removed heatsink, cleaned the thermal pad stuff with isoprphy(sp?) alcohol, put on Silver Actic 5, reinstalled everthing.......this time put side case cover back on, to see what would be like when working, Now Bios reports about 67C at bootup.....!!!!!!!!!!!!! The intel temp prog is higher, not as much as bios, but about 5C higher.

There's no way I can figure out to tell if bios is reporting temp accuretly or not.

I'd order another heatsink/fan, but there's not much for the 775. INtel says the fan has to spread radially to cover the voltage reg also, and some of the pricey heatsink/fans appear like they wouldn't work...

About at wits end on this thing. Any suggestions?

btw, the SonataII has this Hood/duct thingee, I tried it both with it on and without it, but no difference.

Thanks

It seems way too high, but those report are usually higher than actuall temp.

Check if the HS makes good contact with the chip, and if you followed the method which manufacturer recommends on applying the arctic slilver 5 from their website.

You can get good HSFs like Scythe Katana, or Katana 775, Zalman 7000alcu(separate bracket adapter), MST-9775 from Thermalright, Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro. Zalman and MST-9775 and Katana in some lesser degree, will help to cool the mobo, since these blow down.

Thats was one reason I pulled heatsink off, was to try to reassure myself that it was seated ok. You can't tell by looking, since there is no way to 'see'. Even by pulling heatsink, just cuz the arctic silver looks like it was pressed down....well, who knows?

Intel's instructions "listen for 2 clicks for each post" sounds ok in theory, but in practice..... I used to build quite a few systems, but quit when Dell started selling so cheap. This was my first 775. When I saw people posting about how INtel sucks (heat-wise), I thought, ah come on, its not that bad. Maybe it is after all.

I think I re-flash back to an older bios version tonight. If that don't work, might see if can RMA to newegg. Dunno though, dunno if there is actually a problem or what. If I only knew a HSF would cure the problem (if there is actually a problem), then I wouldn't mind a bit in spending the extra $$
