I'm putting together a P4 2.8c in a Thermatake Xaser iii case. It comes with a Hardcano 9. The temperature probe doesn't fit under the processor on the pin side as the instructions suggest. Thermaltakes' faq suggests taping it to the heat sink side in this situation.
1) Is there any issue taping the probe between the proc and the thermal tape that comes on the bottom of the heat sink. It's thin but I am worried about adding a gap which could cause poor conduction.
2) Is the pressure enough that I can skip taping the probe to the proc and just let it sit crunched between the proc and the heat sink.

Welcome to the forum, Slide. :) Depending on how thick this probe is, I may or may not do that. I assume you mean between the ceramic part of the processor and the heatsink and not the core. If the probe is sufficiently thin, you could place it next to the core under the heatsink. If not, I wouldn't risk it.

I didn't know that any of the proc was ceramic--the top just looks metal. In any case, I decided that putting the temp probe on top was probably not a good idea and just taped it to the metal side of the heatsink. I assume since metal conducts so well, the temp of the entire heatsink is likely relatively even. This is my first P4 build so I'm trying not to mess it up. Thanks.

the p4 has a heat spreader on top of the core which protects it, there isnt really any place for you to put that so it would be really secure unless you tape or glue. it's not thermal tape, it's a thermal pad. i would suggest attaching the heatsink, and see if you can slip it in there somewhere...
