Heat & Noise problem: Athlon vs. Duron

I am retooling a computer for my parents. They currently have a PII 450 MHz, 192 MB PC-100 RAM. They want something a helluva lot faster, but not nearly as hot or noisy as my computer, an Athlon XP 1700+ . I was thinking something like a 950MHz Duron, or something like that, nice and affordable. Anyone know whether this will fit the heat and noise requirements?

Heat should be no problem. Are you going to use the stock HSF? That is where a lot of noise will come from. Maybe look into getting a HS that will support an 80mm fan, that way you could slap on a quiet fan and be happy. You may also want to look into replacing their PSU fan as well. I did that to my "family" PC and it worked wonders!

Heat should not be a probs....noise will be depending on the HSF ur using. The stock cooler tht comes w/ the retail version is good enough for a non-O/C PC & the noice level of the HSF is decent.

I concur with the others, however, I'd recommend the Duron1ghz as it has the Morgan core which has the SSE, data prefecth, and improves the heat/power issues over the 950 and the price difference is only 8$. I just bought 2, 1 for me and 1 for a client's workstation and I'm pleased with them. I picked them up for 54$@newegg which is now listing them for 52$. As to the HS/F combo just get a COOLER MASTER DP5-6I11A while your buying the CPU from Newegg as it's only 5.50$+6$ S/H and will suffice for your needs without the jet turbine noise.

The hottest my Duron 1.2 with retail heatsink and fan has gotten after a night of CS is 100f. Currently it is running 93f. It is also fairly quiet.

well what heatsink are you using on ur system? If it's retail, you might have to spend an extra few bucks for something quieter. Perhaps an ALPHA PAL8045 + Panaflo L1A.
