Heat Issues with Nvidia FW 77.72

Perhaps this has been brough up earlier, but has anyone been having heat issues with there nVidia cards?

Ive got an xFx 6800gt PCIe. Although I am quite happy with the performance, i find that the card runs a little hot idle AND under load (58c no oc idle to 85c max oc'd). I contacted xfx tech support (worst tech support i've ever had to deal with) about the prob, and they initially tried to blow me off by telling me that the new nvidia drivers "Increase 2D performance" and thus increase idle temps, which seems to me, to be a total pile of BS.

Ive read in several reviews of this same card that record a un oc'd idle temp of around 47-50c, and I find that a 10 c increase in temperature due to "Increased 2D performance" rediculous. As xfx runs me throught there Clipboard Checklist of User Related Idiocrity (CCURI) (tm), I am worrying about hardware issues and damage to my system. I've never seen PCB melt, and I sure dont want to now.

Rolling back the drivers to the 66 version found on my xfx driver disk produced absolutely no change in temp. I'm pretty sure that the card is getting good airflow, the case has 3 fans and no other PCI devices. I've even tried putting the case with the fan intake over a cold AC vent, which only produced a maximum temp drop of 5c.

Anyone else having driver heat issues?
Thanks

I really don't think drivers will influence the heat, unless you're enabling overclocking features and such. What it may change is the temperature readout though, making it seem like its hot, when really it might not be...

This isn't about heat but 77.72 has a lot of issues and I'd switch to the non-WHQL 77.76 linked at the top of this forum anyways. :)

Just to ease you a bit, these video cards won't "melt" until around 400+C I believe. ;) Ive personally had mine about the boiling temperature of water (100C) without issues, but my problem was complaex, it involved bad airflow, hot ambient temperatures (got air conditioning) and poor quality coolers, which I changed to NV Silencers.

I recommend changing your VGA cooler if you feel comfortable with that, get either the Zalman series coolers (look for one that supports your specific model) or NV Silencers, they perform around the same...

The driver version which caused heating issues with 6800gt/ultra (and probably other models) was 71.84. 71.89 fixed that.
It heated up more because it didn't switch back to 2D mode even when when nothing graphically intensive was going on (like games or mediaplayer). You can manually set 2D speeds lower than the default to run cooler.

Maybe 77.72 has the same problem. Use rivatuner or similar to confirm.

Sound suggestions, i think i will update my drivers. As for cooling, I wanted to wait until it was completely neccessary to say, replace the VGA cooler. Methinks i should have just gotten the 800xl Ultimate...

Im pretty sure that 2D settings are set to default clock speeds (350/1000 for the GT). Maybe i should set them lower?

Updated to 77.77, no change. I think its a hardware issue. I hope my card is not defective :(:brokenheart:

Oops I had a look at your first post again and from what you're saying, its just a hunch that drivers are screwing it up. Well its not. The temps are fine. Its a hot chip.
I'm idling about the same temps and it gets to mid-high 80sC under heavy load. The throttle down threshold is 120C.
