heat guns....

I need to buy a heat gun for this soldering project. Do you think a heat gun from home depot will suffice. I really do not want to spend $100 on a heat gun that is made for soldering. I am just afraid that the home depot one may produce too much heat and start melting everything.

 i agree.... huh?

I have used a heat gun to rma a CPU 😀

(j/k)

I have used a heat gun on a CPU before, but that was for testing for a major OEM, and we didn't RMA anything (since they owned the box)

are you trying to do some sort of ghetto BGA or LCC soldering job? are you supposed to use one of those hot air or reflow oven? cheapest way i guess would be to go down to harbor freight and pickup a $10 heat gun.

It a simple 10 pin DFN packaged chip, but there are no pins, just pads. you could just solder it using an iron, but you also have to be able to solder the ground plane in teh middle.

i could buy a oven, but that costs alot. I could buy a hot air station, but that also costs alot. The cheapest way seems to be a hot air gun, which can be bought at home depot for $30.

Its not really a ghetto job...i mean...if I could afford a hot air station, i'd be all over it....so i guess a heat gin is the next best thing.

well....that's why you make sure it is the first thing to be put on the board. I am just looking for a really cheap hot air station (basically a heat gun that goes up to 400 F).

Got a variable transformer or something to tone down the output of the heat gun? It'll probably work, but I'd practice on something like an old motherboard or something with lots of surface mount components. I've used a heat gun before to harvest passives, just make sure you do it slowly and evenly. You got solder paste right?

I know what I am doing (yes, I have the paste)...I just never went to homedepot to buy soldering tools (because they dont have them). I only need to use this for a week so and normally i would use a hot air station, but paying $500 is not really an option. I guess I'll try in on 1 chip first (I got about 100 samples and I need to make 20 boards).

Heat guns are commonly used on heat shrink tubing in electronic applications for insulating bare wires.

Buy a heatgun at any automotive place for under 30 bucks. Mine is from autozone and works great for everything i've thrown at it.

And I have desoldered a motherboard for fun with it before on the highest setting.
