Heartworm Survival

We recently (approx 3 weeks) ago "saved" a dog from the Animal Shelter.

"Buddy" (name given to the dog by 7 year old) is a good dog and appears to have been abandoned.

He came to us "fixed", well fed, house broken and already knowing Sit and Stay. He also knows Down/Lay Down...but doesn't always respond to it.

He had been found wandering around my parent's cottage in a rural area. We're not sure how long he'd been out there, but the locals say they'd seen him at the cottage for 3-4 days and had just assumed that my parents got a new dog.

We took him to the shelter, put up flyers, asked around the area etc, looking for his owners but he went unclaimed.

So after the waiting period we adopted him.

When we got him home we made an appointment to see the Vet cause he was digging in his ears and we figured a general checkup was in order anyway.

They treated his ears (infection), took a blood sample and gave him an otherwise clean bill of health.

Well...the blood work is back form the lab and he has heartworms, Adult and baby.

We're not sure how long he's had them, but now figure that, that might be why he was abandoned. Cause treatment's going to cost a minimum of $700.

Buddy shows no symptoms of advanced heartworm, and is still very energenic etc. So we thinking it's still early enough to make the treatment worthwhile.

I'm just cuious, as we weigh our options, has anyone else had a dog that survived heartworm treatment? If so, how did it go? Was he/she the same afterward? Anything I should be aware of?

Exceutive Summary:
- Saved Abandoned Dog from Shelter
- Turns out Dog has Heartworms (adult and baby)
- Dog shows no symptoms of the disease, so treatment might still be worthwhile
- Wondering if anyone else has had a dog go though the treatment.

***UPDATE 6/13***
Buddy got his heartworm treatment last Thrusday and Friday, and aside from the pain mediciation making him a bit sluggish this weekend he is OK.

Now the trickey part...to keep him on low activity for 6 weeks. No walks...no running..etc.

In 4 weeks they treat the baby worms, and begin preventative treatment.

After the 6 weeks, they test to make sure he's clean.

They determined he was in Stage 1 (of 5) of the diseases progression...so hopefully he's good to go.

Will update again after next checkup.

$700? I thought you could just give your dog some pills that would treat the heartworm. Didn't think it cost that much.

It is my understanding that if it were early enough in the disease that there were no adult worms, then what you say would be correct, but since it's progressed to have Adult worms in his system, the heavier treatment is called for.

Edit:

The $700 includes the medication (2 treatments), the xrays, the followup test, the overnight stay at the Vet etc.

One of my dogs, Dingo, had heartworms when I found him in the lovely woods of Georgia.
He must have had no adult worms because the treatment was not $700. I would remember that.

This had to have been in 2000 or 2001. They make some super deep injections around the spine
(have to knock the dog out)
other than that area being very sore for a few days, weeks he is fine.

Kennel friend of ours had two dogs treated for adult heartworm. Both dogs survived the treatment. One dog is listless and lethargic, the other dog seems fine. Both German Shepherd Dogs. So I'd say it's 50/50. Sorry I don't have better news.

I give my dogs chewy heartworm medicine every month or two, it's like a chewy dog biscuit. they love em

That is for Prevention. Once a dog has it the treatment changes.

The vet explained the preventative medicine to us, and he will be on it after the worms are cleared up.

Apparently his previous owners didn't believe in preventative medicine.

We hit up family members for a "Save Buddy" fund, so we're gonna take him in for the X-rays, and if it's not a real bad case, we're gonna go ahead with the treatment.
