If any of you are like me and think games like AoE 3 stink, then try Hearts of Iron 2.

Personally, most new RTS's out just arent any fun. Theyre all about graphics and they completely neglect gameplay. AoE3 is a prime example - game looks fantastic, but the actual gameplay is buggy, the maps are tiny, the interface is clunky, and there's very little replay value.

Hearts of Iron 2 came out quite this past fall, but i just found out about it. The graphics arent too hot, but the game has HUGE replay value. It's a game that fans of Risk and Stratego would be familiar with. It's set in the WW2 era, stretching from 1936 to 1947. You can play nearly 200 different countries, from the US to Luxembourg. While there arent any flashy graphics, the gameplay is phenomenal. You can control every detail of your country, from what to research on the historically accurate tech tree to intricate diplomatic relations. And while it sounds like the micromanagement might kill the fun, it doesnt. Its integrated in a way that honestly makes it fun (and im not some micromanagement junky). There is a rather steep learning curve, but the manual is excellent. Still, it took me 3-4 hours to get to know the interface in detail.

There are a bunch of good reviews around, the one at Gamespot is what put me on to it. An expansion was recently released (which i havent tried yet) that extends the timeline past 1947 and through the cold war which should add a lot more gameplay.

So basically, if you prefer a dynamic, engaging game that makes you think about your strategy (and actually be rewarded for doing so, because the AI is really good) over a superficial eye-candy game, then check out HoI2.

Doomsday currently has a "feature" changed over from all other HoI series.
If it doesn't effect your play style in the game, I would recommend Doomsday.
Thread on it issue.
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=240109

In short, a lot of people would have 9 individual divsions, each commanded by a Mj.General except one which had a General or Field Marshal in it. Group those together (Ctrl-1) and you would have that set as your army. Rinse and repeat 15 times or so for your attack on Russia. :D But when that Army Group 1 would attack, everyone would gain experience; all 8 Mj. Generals and the General-FM.

Under the new experience system, only one General gets the experience and it would only be the Field Marshal/General.

Depending on playstyle, it could effect you, due to Generals dying and lack of experience from Mj.Generals to do worthy promotions.

FYI, Doomsday is a full game, not an expansion, even though they sell it as an expansion, it is a stand alone game.

Blame Britian for hardly having anything defense in India and Soviets for dumping all but a handful of divisions to the German front.

AI, in Doomsday seems to be a bit improved over HoI2. When I played as another country briefly, Japan was able to beat China (also Doomsday forums are saying samething).

US is actually agressive in taking islands in the Pacific, unlike when I played HoI2 they just stacked in Hawaii. Still waiting to see if D-Day will ever occur in Germany, never seen it in HoI2.

Not to be too lazy, but depending on the answer, it could determine if I am even going to look at it...

Is it turn based? ATM I'm really starved for a good turn based game.

If not, I'll look into it once I get a new comp. As mine crys when I install anything within the past 3ish years :)

Yeah it's technically an RTS game but I play it like a turn based game... what I mean is you can pause the game whenever you want to think things through or to give orders/build units, etc.. And you can set the game to automatically pause when you complete research, build a new unit, or practically any event that happens in the game. I am a big turn based fan from XCom, Master of Orion/Magic, Civilization and I absolutely LOVE most of the games by Paradox including Hearts of Iron and Europa Univeralis (so excited they are working on Europa Universalis III !!!)

I bought it when it was first released. EU, HoI, etc. still boggle me. Really don't know what to do.....how much I need to build up military, trade, infrastructure.....what weapons and research are important. It's such an open canvas.

HoI 1? or HoI2?

If the 1st HoI, I can understand too:D I am still confused for HoI 1.. But the 2nd version they made research pretty easy to understand. Everything has a historical year, if you try to research something in 1941 that isn't due til 1944, you'll recieve negative bonus. Closer to the historical date, the less penatly you'll get. Also, you'll want to have researchers that have highlighted boxes to do the projects. If two researchers are 7's and one has 3 boxes highlighted under him and the other has 4, you'll want to use the researcher with 4 highlighted ones, because he'll research it faster than the one with 3. Same goes for one that is a 9 with only 2 boxes, he'll research it slower than the 7 with 4 highlighted.

What kind of stuff to research, well, just depends on what you want to do and how big/small the country you have is. If Russia, lots and lots of infranty, upwards of 200+ divisons (some multi-player games I've heard hit 500 divisions in Russia), so you'll want to concentrate on infantry research and maybe mobile infantry or mech. infantry as support for the one on foot. Or if you want Russia to have a Navy the British will even fear, go that route.

Trade, is up to you, can never trade, accept all trades, or just what you want. If your country is all in the positive (gaining) resources but oil, you might want to get that back to normal levels. If you run out of a resource, your factories (steel, rares, energy) will lose effectiveness. Run out of oil, ships, tansk, self-propelled arty, etc. will reduce the speed of what it moves at. If I'm a major country, I usually aim for trades that give me supplies as I can move the supply slider down and give those IC's to more needed projects.

Infranstructure is how fast your divisions move into a province. Also affects how well supplies get to your divisions. Bomb the hell out of it and they have supply problems while attacking you. Factories, good at start of game, gives you more IC's in the long run during the war(s).

Let us know your impressions of the game

Just to make sure, the review of the doomsday expansion on Amazon said the original HOI2 is included. Is this true?

Definitely

from GoGamer.com

Overview
Hearts of Iron II Doomsday is a standalone, complete version of the game that expands upon Hearts of Iron II, by increasing the time line to include the development of super weapons.

Like lozina said, yes, HoI2 is included in DD, even though they say it's an expansion, it is a full version. No need for HoI2.

Yeah, but unless its turn based my comp will cry like a little baby while playing.

I just have to wait till I get my new comp is all. Will definitly keep it in mind though. I love the idea of autopauses for those reasons.
