If any of you are like me and think games like AoE 3 stink, then try Hearts of Iron 2.
Personally, most new RTS's out just arent any fun. Theyre all about graphics and they completely neglect gameplay. AoE3 is a prime example - game looks fantastic, but the actual gameplay is buggy, the maps are tiny, the interface is clunky, and there's very little replay value.
Hearts of Iron 2 came out quite this past fall, but i just found out about it. The graphics arent too hot, but the game has HUGE replay value. It's a game that fans of Risk and Stratego would be familiar with. It's set in the WW2 era, stretching from 1936 to 1947. You can play nearly 200 different countries, from the US to Luxembourg. While there arent any flashy graphics, the gameplay is phenomenal. You can control every detail of your country, from what to research on the historically accurate tech tree to intricate diplomatic relations. And while it sounds like the micromanagement might kill the fun, it doesnt. Its integrated in a way that honestly makes it fun (and im not some micromanagement junky). There is a rather steep learning curve, but the manual is excellent. Still, it took me 3-4 hours to get to know the interface in detail.
There are a bunch of good reviews around, the one at Gamespot is what put me on to it. An expansion was recently released (which i havent tried yet) that extends the timeline past 1947 and through the cold war which should add a lot more gameplay.
So basically, if you prefer a dynamic, engaging game that makes you think about your strategy (and actually be rewarded for doing so, because the AI is really good) over a superficial eye-candy game, then check out HoI2.
