I totally agree with Gurck.

In the history.
Missionaries were also used as a tool.
When an empire wanted to invade a 3rd world nation, they sent missionaries first knowing that they're going to be killed soon.
People of those 3rd nations had been living in their land generations after generations beliving in their religion/faith/philasophy. Then came these missionaries with their values, injecting those into the society. Think how you'd feel if Islams became a super power sending missionaries and people getting hooked on it. It was a lot of worse back then as there were not enough method of communication to understand each other.
Anyway, missionaries get killed, then people get upset about their oh-so-innocent and holy sacrifices. That gives good excuse for empire to declare a 'holy' war. Thus, the madness of 'Kill 'em all in the name of justice. Kill 'em all in the name of God' begins.

That was a deal of the century for missionaries and greedy empires. Missionaries got what they wanted(Holy sacrifice for God), empires got what they wanted(Profit! with good excuse)

EDIT: Well, I do feel sorry for those missionaries............but every time they wake me up in the middle of nice sunday morning, telling me about oh-so-great-and-almighty <insert any god's name here>, I, too, wanna smack them in the head. To me, nice sunday morning sleep is more important than any god combined.

Thanks for all the replies, sorry I haven't been around to respond the last day I have been pretty busy.

For clarification, when I first posted the thread at the end I said I was accepting Paypal donations if anyone wanted to help these people recover the money they lost. I was unaware that this was against the rules, but I asked the moderator if I could repost the thread without that sentence and so that's what happened. I'm a bit taken back that some think I was "peddling" for money; my intention was not to insult you or pressure you into giving money, I was merely concerned for my friends. I apologize if you got this impression, but I wasn't trying to scam any of you and I hope you don't think that now.

Anyways, things are settling down for the Lashbrooks. Like many have pointed out, it is a true blessing that no one was killed and for that I am very thankful. I feel a few of the posts here were a little heartless, but I know that many of you really do care and I appreciate that very much.

Thank you for all your sympathy!

I would wager based on that single comment you have NO idea what poverty is like on these islands, it makes our homeless look like wealthy kings.

How exactly? You're quick to flap your gums in defense of shoving christianity down others' throats, but I'd really like to know how people with nothing but a few scraps of dilapidated clothing are wealthy compared to anyone. Keep in mind many of our nation's homeless have to deal with a potentially lethal winter and that many have mental conditions such as downs syndrome and schizophrenia.

Why don't you do a little research and go visit the islands and see what it's like. You have absolutely NO idea. I didn't even visit one of the three islands I listed (although I visited eight others) and I saw poverty that would make islanders WISH to be homeless on the streets of an american city. You are a spoiled child of america that cannot grasp the poverty that exists in this world because you look at our homeless and think there situation is as bad as it can get. The poverty in this country although not a good thing is uncomparable to the poverty that exists outside this nation.

And if you are going to throw the accusation at me why don't you show me where I defended proselyting?

You're the one flaming me, the least I'd expect is an explanation of why. Please stop avoiding the question. Without any reasoning on your part, I'll have to assume you're simply arguing because I'm not christian.

Your the second person in two days (so I would say you are at least as stupid as Dave) to accuse the atheist that got OT created (because of a religion thread with Netopia) of being a Christian you fvcking tool. You simply have no idea what the fvck you are talking about when you say that homeless people in the US have it just as bad and you need to educate yourself about it before you go running your mouth off in comparisons when you have NO EXPERIENCE whatsover with it. You can ASSume anything you want but no words I use can describe the poverty in the carribean.

You think ad homs will take the focus off of how you've completely avoided my question?

I should preach religion and call people names when I have nothing to back up my statements, I'd be elite within a month. It's honestly a shameful title due to people like you who have it.

It's called ad homien and I doubt you even know what it means. And I agree you are quite confused, you continue to insist that you understand something without any real world experience with it. As I said I cannot even begin to describe the poverty outside the US and I'm not even going to try because it wouldn't do it justice. Why don't you just STFU about the comparison because as I've been saying all along you don't have any experience with it and your ASSumptions about it do nothing more than make you look like the ASS you are.

And for the record the title is meaningless, your continued focus on it shows your immaturity and apparent jealousness of something so insignificant as a couple words printed below an avatar.

I'm not jealous whatsoever, I've just noticed that elite members are proportionally far less intelligent, less mature, more obnoxious and more likely to preach religion than other posters. You're no exception on three of those counts; rather you're a shining example.

If you can't bring yourself to reply in a mature manner with the intent to discuss, I have nothing more to say to you. Your tactic of covering up ignorance with a surly attitude; trying to avoid what you're incapable of discussing by making character attacks & calling me names is pathetic.

I'm still waiting on your answer.

Lets go back to the beginning shall we? You made the following assertion:

Originally posted by: Gurck

This was in response to someone commenting on the poverty present in the carribean. So you are making the assertian that the homeless in this country have it as bad off as people from third world countries. You make this assertian WITH NO EXPERIENCE WITH POVERTY IN THE CARRIBEAN. I post the following:

My post simply points out that you don't have a fvcking clue what you are talking about because you have NO EXPERIENCE WITH POVERTY IN THE CARRIBEAN. To which you reply:

In which you first sentence is an attack on me. To which I reply:

The poverty in this country although not a good thing is uncomparable to the poverty that exists outside this nation.

And if you are going to throw the accusation at me why don't you show me where I defended proselyting?

And again point out that until you have actual experience with the poverty in the carribean that you have NO EXPERIENCE WITH POVERTY IN THE CARRIBEAN. And I relate the FACT that I have visted and witnessed poverty in the carribean that is worse than that present in america and I didn't even visit one of the big three. From there all your posts have been attacks on me personally and stupid fvcking rants about elite members in general such as the following:

In which you add even more attacks on me. Then you have the gall to say the following:

In which you take the "high ground" and after starting all the insults and continuing to insult at every single opportunity including attacks inside a paragraph where you proclaim that you won't reply to a post that contains futher "character attacks & calling me names".

Pot. Kettle. Black. Take you own advice and cease posting and learn in the future to not make assertians that you have no personal knowledge of and are YOURSELF incapable of backing up. Everyone on this forum that has visted the carribean is intimately aware that the poverty that exists down there is far in excess of what exists in america. No person in this country will go hungry or without shelter if they choose not to.

The vast majority of the homeless in this country are of three categories, those that choose to be homeless, those that are drug addicts and those that are mentally ill. Anyone that wishes to and can abide by the rules of the shelters can find shelter and help, and with the charities and soup kitchens in addition to the federal governments social safety net (not to mention begging will net close to $300 a day in most cities in the US) no one in this country will go hungry. But you don't know anything about that because you are still a child with NO EXPERIENCE WITH POVERTY in the carribean or the US.

So in summary take your own fvcking adivce.

Gurck, give it up. rahvin is right.
The poverty in Mexico, even in the big tourist spots with all the american money flowing is is astounding.
The islands and any remote areas are worse.

You're missing the point, and the poor kid's not right; people don't choose to be mentally ill (including drug addiction).

Even if it were a choice, his tactic of cursing excessively and calling people names while avoiding discussion has all the earmarks of a child posting and is detrimental to discussion... which given ATOT's average age of ~20 according to polls, isn't surprising.

rahvin, despite a very apt username, I still have to wonder if you're using an older sibling's or parent's account to post. I'd suggest sticking to P&N, or better yet some Counterstrike forums. You'll find a demographic there a lot more like yourself, and I think you'll be much happier.

Oh yes we are all missing the point you obviously know far more about poverty in the US and outside it even without any experience, and keep up the attacks, I'm sure it's winning you all kinds of support and admiration.

You would be fools to not believe they did some proselytizing. It's inevitable, as people who feel the generousity and kindness of those who are well meaning'd and religious would be curious about them (ie their religion).

And yeah, it is dangerous, the risks are known, and if they didnt know the risks, then they learned from their mistake without paying the ultimate penalty. I have sympathy for their plight, but honestly, what can one expect to happen? *shrug* It's not like there was no significant chance of it happening.

If a man ran across a field full of gunfire attempting to save his friend and died, I would feel a twinge of sorrow for him, but more respect for what he is trying to do. If a man ran across a field of gunfire trying to survive and died, I would feel more sorrow for him, and less respect.

I guess I'm saying I feel more respect for these people who are trying to help orphans, but little to no sorrow since the risks are pretty much inherent. My feelings are also mixed because I hate proselytizing, period.

Selective memory? Amensia? I swear it's humerous how hypocritical you have been in this thread but I don't expect a lot from someone that has nearly 11,000 posts in a little over a year and at 27 years old is spending his saturday night posting on ATOT.
