Wow. Makes me wonder how many stories like that we will be hearing about in the near future.

I have to admit your topic title gave me a bit of pause because I just filed my (US) taxes online yesterday.

WOW that is very scary. I read an article that over 80% in US filed their Fed return electronically in 2012, I would assume 2014 will create even more potential targets. I hope this was not an issue in the US but wonder if we would even been informed.

This has been interesting to watch unfold, I'm glad it doesn't effect any of the systems I manage, but it does give me a little bit of high BP thinking about how many accounts I have out there.

On a side note, I always wondered why so many folks wait to file until literally April 15th. Is it because they owe or because they have just so many deductions and headaches they put it off? I always file first week of February.

Some institutions drag their feet getting all the necessary forms to the customer. My brokerage did not get me my tax forms until March.

I haven't received money back for about 20 years, so I always wait until the last day or so. Also, if you have lots of investments it seems like you keep getting corrected information up until about April 1 or so. Having to amend a return several times isn't any fun.

Makes sense. I know W-2's HAVE to be postmarked by Jan 31, so I always get everything I need by first week of Feb. I don't have investments or any of that either so, I usually get a return, in which case, I like to file ASAP.

Sorry to hear that, fortunately I don't have any investments. I didn't get money back the first couple of years after moving into my new house (I always got money back while apartment living) so I started having extra withheld, and adjusted my claims. Now I almost always get a return. I have a baby on the way as well, so I'm pretty sure I'll get a return next year too, heh.
