Heart Palpitations. [Updated]

Anyone ever have them a lot?

I usually get them once a week or so and it doesn't bother me.

However for the last 30 hours i've beengetting a palpitation every 5-15 minutes.

I'm only 17 which is kind of funny to have to worry about my heart.

Doctor tomorrow...

=================================================================

Just got home from the doctor.

He listened, felt, looked.

They stuck me with about 10 stickers with wires attached to them and looked at my heartbeat for about 15 seconds.

They said my heart sounded normal and the normal beats (without palpitations) were normal aswell.

He also stressed the fact that Caffeine, smokes, alcohol, over the counter cold medicine and illegal drugs are a main cause of these.

However I haven't been taking any of that at all.

So, I go back next week for blood tests, an ultrasound of my heart to make sure nothing is visibly wrong and they will stick me with stickers and wires again and give me a battery-powered monitor to wear for 24 hours so they can catch the palpitations and see what they are.

Fun stuff. 🙂

What does it feel like?

every once in a while the heart just goes "BAM BAM"

like a big spasm or twitch.

makes you want to cough kind of and you lose your breath.

Every once in a while there norma, especially when your young ... if its happening a lot, or starts happening more often you need to go get checked out by a doctor which I see you are already doing.

most palpitations are benign, however its something that should be discussed with a doctor, because if its not benign its something that needs to be addressed.

palpitation itself doesnt mean a whole lot, i think the basic definition is 'when you become aware of your heartbeat' strong beats, irregular beats, missed beats etc...

if the dr. thinks there needs further investigation they will typically have you wear a 24hr halter monitor to record and diagnose the events.

i have some anxiety issues, and often experience many different types of 'unusual' heart sensations and it can be unnerving.

when you bring the issue up with your doctor, they will probably check very basic things, blood for hyper/hypothyroidism. they will feel to see if your heart is not enlarged, and listen for clicks or murmers to detect valve defects. if you are older or the dr. feels the need for further investigation, halter monitor, beta blockers etc.. may be courses of action.

i wouldnt be real worried, but i would schedule your yearly physical and talk to your dr. specifically about this.

I get them from time to time if I exert myself when my blood sugar is low or when I'm tired-- i.e. playing basketball without eating for the previous 8 hours.

I've been checked out...it is no big deal.

You might have a Anxiety Disorder. My heart used to do that and my doctor put me on Zoloft....doesnt happen anymore.

Good luck,
Chris🙂

The battery powered monitor isn't much fun. I wore one for a day. No shower for you, and sleeping with it was a pain. No doubt it works well though. I was fine, and hope you are too.

My wife gets those from time to time. Her milk allergy tends to aggrevate them. She was diagnosed with Mitro Valve Prolapse. From what the cardiologist said, what she has isn't really serious. She's 25.

by ultrasound, i think your referring to an echocardiograph ... im suprised they are going to give you one, its an expensive procedure 1500-2000 dollars and they generally dont throw referals out very easily for it.

plus the 24 monitor...

either you have really good doctors, or they think you are dying 😀
