Hearing loss? Not me.

Or so I thought...

I had the bedroom window open last night when I went to bed. I initially was laying on my back with my head turned such that my left ear was buried in the pillow. I was listening to the sounds of the crickets doing their thing outside thinking how nice it was to have the window open. I shifted onto my right side which put my right ear into the pillow and I realized that I could no longer hear the crickets - at all.

Wow! I had no idea. Makes me wonder if I should have a hearing aid.

Everyone has hearing loss, it's just a matter of what extent you have it

Did you do any further testing? Covering each ear in turn, listening to other sounds, etc.?

Might not be your hearing. A high frequency sound like that is highly directional and easily reflected off of surfaces. If I lay on my right side I'm going to hear sounds that come from or are reflected off the right wall of my bedroom, and vice versa if I roll over onto my other side. I've noticed sounds before that could only be heard while laying on one side or the other.

No, I didn't go any further with it last night, I was intent on sleep. It does warrant some further investigation on my part just for the sake of interest.

I'm fully deaf in my left ear and have about 1/4th in my right. I sleep with my right ear on the pillow. If i try to lay the other way no matter where i am it's far to noisy.

That's pretty much what tipped me off to my hearing loss as well.
I could hear my wife one way, but not the other.

I now have a hearing aid in the "bad" ear, but really both ears are pretty bad.
They each filter frequency differently so somethings are better in the other ear.
I have a otosclerosis (hardening of ear bones)... so I am different than most hearing loss.

The hearing aid is love/hate.
It's great in most situations at work, home, etc.
The industry absolutely sucks. It's a giant scam since they are "medical devices".
They must be prescribed, have 5000% markup and can only be adjusted by a licensed reseller.

yeah i wear a cross aid system. on my left is the microphone and the right ear has the speaker.

the fucker was expensive as fuck.

In the US it's really fucked up. They are medical devices yet i have never seen a insurance cover them. But since 1-2 actually do they are so fucking marked up it's insane.

AND then the new ones are only adjusted with a computer by a tech!

EVEN after all of that the US is a generation or two BEHIND other countries. for what we pay here in the US for shitty ones you can get the latest tech in Europe.

I got new ones last year or so. The fucking puppy we just got somehow climbed on my desk and eat them..FUCK

5k chew toys.....

You know its a scam when they offer free replacement on lost/damaged aids.
They have new aids that are completely disposable (Phonak Lyric).
It's a subscription where you go in every 3 months for new aids to be inserted.
I asked my audiologist how they refurbish the aids and install new batteries, she said "Oh, we throw them away. They tell us not to tell the customers that."
LOL, such a scam.
They inflate the prices to cover multiple office visits, replacements, adjustments, etc.
Do they pass the savings on to customers who get fit once and never visit again? No.

I also love the excuse that they are new aged technology and hand crafted. Bull shit.
It's 30 year old technology and costs $20 to make.

granted the last pair i had were FAR better then the set i had 10 years ago. They went from analog to digital sound. granted the price shot up but it was a night and day difference.

They aren't really much difference in the price to make either. When i got my last set i looked at prices in the US and Europe. I could get a better set and more features for like HALF the price of t he set i could get here.

I'm not sure if it's still the say way. but it wouldn't surprise me.

Or get an alarm clock w/ different sounds. I like falling asleep to rain myself.

I used to use a fan but now I just use that when I actually need to be cooled

I haven't noticed any hearing loss so far. My girlfriend says I have super hearing because I can tell when she got a text from across the room when her phone is on silent. A couple of days ago I was in bed with her and I heard a very soft brushing sound that repeated over and over again. I asked her if she heard it and described it to her, but she couldn't even though the room was relatively silent aside from the sound of the ceiling fan. I turned the light on to reveal my cat chewing on the brush attachment to my vacuum cleaner on the other side of the room. She was kind of amazed (I think she thought I was imagining it). She's 8 years younger than I am.

This is very true. Company safety guy here, and we have to do annual hearing testing on most of our employees. I am surprised at how bad some peoples hearing is. Mine actually fell off this year, which I did not realize until I had my hearing tested.

You sure it wasn't just from your left ear being buried in the pillow for however long and then you fell asleep before it was adjusted back to normal?

I doubt it, this was only a matter of minutes. I got in bed in one position and quickly decided on another. But I will investigate further because inquiring minds want to know, mine included.

We send our new hires for a pre-employment physical at a local medical clinic, they also do hearing tests. I think the cost is about $25-25. You might have a local medical clinic/urgent care that does hearing testing. There are of course other alternatives.

I listened to very loud music when I was younger and went to a lot of concerts. My hearing is definitely damaged from that and I have a similar issue as you describe. One side is much more sensitive to sounds. I can definitely hear the difference depending on which side is on the pillow. It's very noticeable. When I had my hearing tested years ago they said it was like a 10db difference.

I had mine tested yearly for the 30 years I worked in a stamping plant. Not kidding about either.

I'm not all that concerned about it actually. I'll mention it to my primary care doctor on my next visit. He would have to refer me in order for me to get any kind of reimbursement.
