Heard this advertised on a conservative radio show. Ad spot made it sound like the second coming of A/C technology. Isn't it just a swamp cooler?

It's called "Cool Me Pro". Looks like a Small USB-powered swamp cooler.

Reminds me of the grift going on with "emergency solar" packages for preppers being sold on those radio shows. $2000 for a kit that goes for around $500 worth of parts on ebay or Amazon.

Here's an explaination and list of swamp coolers.

Yep. Just a swamp cooler. I remember in the 60's, my stepdad had a swamp cooler that sat on the floorboard of his 59 Buick Electra. Filled it with water a couple of times per day while driving across country. Helped keep the car reasonably cool.(er)

The issue with swamp coolers is they will drive up the humidity and that's actually what makes the heat so unbearable as it makes you feel all icky. There's also the DIY setups with a bucket of ice but the issue with that is if you use ice that was made in your freezer, the freezer generated more heat making the ice than what the ice will cool.

The best cheap solution is to just buy a small window AC unit as even a 5000BTU unit is going to work better than any DIY system that will end up costing you just as much. You can always mod a window unit to be a packaged unit as well, if you don't have a window to put it in. Essentially you setup an intake and exhaust and have it go through a hole or other opening to the outside.

Before I got central AC I had a 12,000 BTU portable unit that I rigged through a window in a similar way. I cut out plywood to fit where the screen goes and had an intake and exhaust port on it. It worked well, it was just so loud. I redirected the air towards the return and I would run the furnace blower, it did not quite do the whole house but it did help a bit.

What's old is new?

If you're in the southwest or other dry climates some extra humidity may be acceptable.
