I never got into Opeth for some reason, and yet they are a type of band i figured i would get into. I did like the acoustic album though. Ill give this album a shot as well.
I figured I could get into them pretty easily as well...took me two full years to fully appreciate and understand what was so awesome about (IMO) "Ghost Reveries", and now I love them.
"The Lotus Eater" is definitely an interesting song...it's a lot faster than anything from "Ghost Reveries", though it's full of clean vocals (but it's pretty powerful, and when the growling comes in, it fits REALLY well). The intro is pretty strange...Akerfeldt is singing and humming this strange melody (no real words spoken) to some weird background stuff, and then it just blasts right into the song. It also has a section where it sounds like a weird jazzy/beeping section (I don't know what else to call it)...it really threw me off, but I'm really getting into this song. It's weird to say this, but this song is
fun to listen to...I generally don't think of "fun" music when I think of Opeth (but it's still awesome).
"Porcelain Heart" is alright for me...it's mostly slower, more repetitive...though it does have a couple sections that are bit faster paced, and they're pretty cool to listen to. In a way, this is comparable to "The Grand Conjuration" for me. It's generally slower, has a heavy riff that plays and switches back and forth between the heavy/soft part...not a lot of variation, and a few cool parts thrown in. Overall, it's just "OK" for me.
If this album is more like "The Lotus Eater" than "Porcelain Heart", it should be pretty good and fairly exciting/fun to listen to.
