Hear the amazingness that is great mastering

So I'm listening to this CD right now through my SR60s and AV710's Wolfson DAC. What I'm hearing is absolutely BLOWING MY MIND. I'm sitting at my computer and turning around, expecting to see a full band playing in my room.

EDIT: Upon further review of the Head-Fi thread, I'm not sure if this IS binaural or not. Oh well, it sounds amazing.

To get the full effect of this CD, it is recommended to have good headphones, but I don't think it will make much difference.

These files are .FLAC, so you'll need a music player that can handle FLAC files (Foobar2000, maybe Winamp).

And here's where I copy the post on Head-Fi:

So at the local Toronto meet last weekend we were lucky enough to have an Ultrasone representative present. And he left us this awesome "Ultrasone" CD that literally made us all scream in disbelief. We listened to the CD first with Ultrasone's 2200 cans (~250 USD) from a Hornet "M". Just incredible. The first track had such incredible imaging that we thought that the music was coming from another room. However after trying other headphones, it was apparent that the recordings themselves had a lot to do with the incredible sound. Regardless, it's an awesome CD.

I call it a "benchmark" CD because it has 20 tracks, including a wide variety from ambient, Jazz, classical, tuning forks, wildlife, shorelines and whatnot. This is probably the most amazing sounding compilation I've ever tried. It's just magnificent, and I'm running it ampless out of my ipod to SR-60s/D-Jays. On higher end cans, you've never heard anything like it. With really nice imaging cans like K1000s I'm sure not much can come close to how well mastered the CD is.

We kind of got permission to share the CD, so I grabbed it, converted it to (lowest level compression) FLAC. .wav is too big to share, and lossy doesn't do it for me. I chose low level compression because I hate the artifacts that sometimes show up on my rockbox'ed ipod mini at highest compression, and the difference between sizes is like <1 mb / 15mb track. Anyways, here's the link:

http://www.filefactory.com/file/c732b8/

Note: this is not a copyrighted CD. There are no indications on the sleeve or CD itself of such, but please use this for private usage. As I've said before, if there's alot of interest I'll do .mp3 (lame), .ogg or whatever.

The file downloads at about 150 kbps, so expect it to take about 30 minutes to download the ~300 mb .rar file. It's .rar because it wouldn't let me host a folder, only one file, so this saves having to host 20 seperate files.

Enjoy!

Oof, not sure how I forgot that.

I really liked the first track, and the soundscape demo tracks were amazing. I havent yet had a chance to go through it all, but I will. Are there any tracks that you would recommend?

If the processing of the audio data before putting in on a disc makes such a huge improvement then why doesn't all music get this treatment? I mean, what's the point of high end audio gear if all the music you put in it is inferior compared to what it could be? It's like the old saying, "garbage in garbage out". I guess SACD and DVD-A is supposed to address this issue, but I don't think very much music is released on those formats.

Server's getting hammered

edit: on nvm 😱

Coming in at 800+ kb here, almost pegging my connection. God I love cable.

Edit: Forgot I had Azureus going, this would probably be capping out at 10mbit if I didn't.

Will leechget remove the 50 kbps d/l cap my school has?
No, your pipe can only do what your pipe can do. What LeechGet will do is remove any caps the server has by breaking the download up into 3 tasks and doing all at once. So if your pipe and server can do it, 3x what the normal download speed would be.

Yeah, it is cheating a bit, sorry. 😛 I have Comcast at home myself, and the Powerboost feature does enable 2 MB+/sec speed for the first 15 seconds or so of a download.
