Healthy young beggars.

I'm in Berkeley next summer, and one thing that really bothers me is the begging. I don't mean the crazy homeless, or no legged homeless beggars. The ones who piss me off are the young people (teens, early 20s) with nothing wrong with them who sit around every day and demand money "to travel," and act like it's owed to them and that those who don't give them money are "the Man" or some sh!t. Am I crazy, or are they? I'm by no means an incompassionate person, but that's exactly what bothers me about this. They just sit there demanding money for no reason and make no attempt to get it themselves. I've thought about ways I could get food to give to the actually needy homeless people, but people who beg out of "attitude" (for lack of a better word) should fvck off, in my opinion. I also kind of feel trapped because I feel like no matter how I react they'll just use it to further feed their delusions about "the Man" and people being "intolerant."

What do you guys think about this? Do they have a right to ask for money? Do they have a right to _expect_ money? (I hope not, and the fact that they are here all the time probably means they do get some) In other words, how do you all feel about this?

Once I was walking by and was asked for money so I handed him a burger in the McD bag I was carrying and he threw it at me and said "I don't need your fvcking charity!". These kids normally just want the payola.

wait until your roommate is reading a book or newspaper, and go stand in front of him. wait until he feels your presence and when he puts his literature down and looks at you and asks you what you are doing, just look him dead in the eyes with a serious face and say in a monotone voice: "i wouldnt drive anywhere in my car today".

They've everywhere up here in Portland and Seattle for the past few years. Young, healthy, clean-clothed, freshly-bathed, and obviously-slept-in-a-warm-bed-last-night panhandlers. And they always have nasty attitudes about how somehow I should just give them money simply because they ask and they feel entitled. These punks really piss me off because their panhandling is taking money from the real homeless and needy, those who really are sleeping outside in the cold and in desperate need, so there is absolutely no fscking way I will ever give these punks money.

Maybe you should throw rocks at them.

fixed your post

You know, sometimes its actually kinda hard to find rocks. But, with pennies, you can just make a note to keep some pennies in your pocket for change purposes. Plus, with pennies, its like, here's money. I want to help you in your quest in becoming useless pieces of sh1t while you ask me to wash my windshield. Here, here's your busfare.

This pisses me off to no end, and makes me so angry that I don't want to give anybody money. Get a freaking job, losers. I see some of these kids in the mornings when I'm going to class, and in the afternoon/evenings when I'm on my way back home. They haven't moved (so far as I can tell), and they're still begging for money. If they had been working during those four or five hours between the times when I passed them, wouldn't they be better off? I see "help wanted" signs all over the place here, and sure, they're not going to start out as CEOs of major corporations, but isn't employment better than demeaning themselves by begging?

I know that there are homeless people of all ages who are incapacitated or have other challenges that prevent them from getting or keeping work or shelter, but I find it hard to believe that all of the clean, healthy-looking kids asking me for money fit into this category.

The are the scourge of society. When I lived in Austin; attending UT, I worked from 8:00pm to 6:00am at a warehouse to barely make ends meet. One morning I got off work and pulled into a fast food joint for some breakfast before an 8:00am class. This young begger was waiting for me at the drive-thru microphone where you place the order. He had the audacity to ask me for $5. I said fvck off and gave him a look of contempt that told him I was in no mood for his sob story. He walked back to the car behind me and never gave a second look;able bodied POS :|.

no, they are homeless. what he's saying is they aren't crazy or unable to work, they just choose to live on the street.

i know a girl who lived on the streets for a few years. she traveled all around the country. she moved back in with her parents when she got pregnant. she now has her sh!t together pretty well. works, pays for her own place, goes to school. she used to make stupid craft things out of people's landscaping plants to sell for drug/gas money.

most of those kids are on drugs. my friend took everything under the sun, and lots of it.

i sympathize with them to a certain extent. they are mostly just so disillusioned with society and what it has to offer them in terms of meaning or true happiness that they've just given up trying to play the game. i feel like that a lot, too, but at the same time i know that living on the streets isn't the answer.

Berkeley is a freaking haven for all kinds of bums, and that's why it's such a ghetto city. Plus, of course, the fact, that the city council is a bunch of old pot-smokers. As well as the rest of the city population which is not affiliated with the university.

Come summer, all the bums and punks migrate there and start clogging up the streets and entrances to cafes (which is why quite a few of them went out of business).
Of course, every time the university tries to demolish that mother of all crime, 'People's park', there's an outcry from whatever's left of the 60s generation: don't touch free speech. Damn, I wish the Uni just said 'screw you', bulldozed it and built a nice dorm/plaza or smth. there.
