This paves the way for the """entire""" Obamacare healthcare reform law to survive.
The law is found 100% constitutional.
The court bypasses to rule on constitutional of entire law.
Healthcare reform is the law of the land.
The court leaves it up to the people to decide if the law is good or bad. The court gave no opinion on that.

Judges do rule Medicaid limitations unconstitutional; could be an interesting backdoor for conservative Governors...

Kind of interesting. There is no political accountability in this as we heard for months "this is not a tax," however I am glad to see SCOTUS took it that way rather than giving congress even more power/precident under the commerce clause...

From SCOTUSblog:
Amy Howe:
The Court holds that the mandate violates the Commerce Clause, but that doesn't matter b/c there are five votes for the mandate to be constitutional under the taxing power.

Ginsberg, Sotomayor, Kagan, and Breyer say the mandate passes both taxing power and commerce clause.

Roberts says it passes only taxing power.

Fox news is asking WHERE are the poor going to get the money to buy healthcare????

This is EXACTLY what I meant when I said this now paves the way for medicare expansion (for the poor) and-or the government option creation.

A HUGE change in American healthcare. Huge!!!!

You know, I am happy to be wrong in this instance as I voted that the mandate wouldn't survive.

The GOP and my own pessimistic self can suck it! :p

Don't worry, the wealth will trickle down! The market will sort it out! (LOL)

The public option should never have been taken off the table when this law was being debated. Honestly, since the mandate was upheld it is a natural consequence of the healthcare law. It is the only conceivable way to tackle the free-rider problem which is due to not refusing care to those without means. The ACA just moves that timetable up considerably, which is a good thing.

The question becomes what if we don't create more jobs and people don't have money to buy insurance?

What? They gave congress tons of power. They can now enact taxes on anything they want and force you to buy the taxed item even if you don't want it.
This sets a horrible precident.

all this does is raise taxes on those that already pay taxes. The people that couldn't afford health insurance before this, still won't be able to afford health insurance now. It doesn't put money in anyones pocket except the government.
I hope i'm not right, but I can imagine a lot of employers are going to start dropping their health coverage benefits for their employees and just pay the $2000 penalty (tax) as that is much cheaper for the employer. The employees are going to have to foot the bill now, which means many more people will be dependent on the government, which is what the Libs want. They want total control over our lives.

That is the definition of tax. They can tax as much as they want...

If they would have taken this as a tax from the start it wouldn't even have been seen at the SCOTUS level.

Roberts moved the goal posts by calling it a tax and not taking it under the commerce clause though.
