Health problem question - potentially gross, detailed reading ahead! =(

Hi. I am a 23-year old male. A little overweight (6'3" 255 - beefy, somewhat muscular). For the past two years or so... I've had a problem with my throat, and the crap in it. I'll feel a buildup of some stuff, and while not painful or anything, it's extremely annoying. It's lodged deep in there, and I haven't found a technique to properly cough it out. So what always happens is that it randomly will "slide" up and out without any effort, always unexpectedly, every other week or so.

What comes out is a small mass of abstract shape. It's always off-white/cream in color, and it ranges in size from a green pea to a nickel. When it exits, it's shape is fairly rigid, but smushes easily between my fingertips and seems pasty. ... .... and it f*cking reeks. I've never smelled anything as bad in my life. The first time it happened I almost cried because it bugged me so much how something so stinky could come out of the non-ass end of my body. I have a very courageous and loving girlfriend who offered to briefly analyze it. Upon her whiff of it, she immediately stated that it smelled simply like, infection.

Infection? Yeah... she's right. It so does. She nailed it.

Am I coughing (sliding) up masses of pure infection?? That's scary to me. I'm about to go see the doctor for this since it never worried me too deeply, and I just recently have acquired health insurance.

The point of this was NOT to gross anyone out, or to waste anybody's time. I'm just looking to see if anyone else might have this problem, or have heard of anything like it.

Ease my mind!

It's called a tonsiloth, and it is realitivly common.

It's not "infection".. It's caused by particles of food and other things getting caught in pockets in your throat/tonsils, and frankly, rotting.. At least, that's the cause of some of them.. It's mainly caused by dead mucous membrane cells.. bacteria love to feed on them, and bacterial waste is malodorous.

Most people combat them with waterpics and gargling a lot.

I never used to get them, but when my girlfriend gave me mononucleosis, my tonsils got pitted pretty bad, and I occasionally get one.. And indeed, they do occour when I'm slightly sick..post-nasal drip seems to make them form more often because of all the mucous.

It's fscking nasty, I'll tell you that. And unfortunately, it causes bad breath. 🙁

There isn't much you can do about them, other than gargling and using a waterpic. Go ahead and go to the doc since it will be pretty much free, and he will advise you.

What you're describing sounds like tonsillar concretions (aka tonsilloliths), which are masses of cells and bacteria that build up in the crypts of your tonsils and occasionally come loose (or are picked out by hand). They do stink really bad, and have a whitish, "cheesy" consistency. Some people are more susceptible to this than others. I get them occasionally, usually when I am "fighting off" a virus.

If it's actually coming from further down in your esophagus, I have no idea. My suggestion would be to see a doctor.

There have been quite a few threads on this; let me see if I can dig 'em up. 😛 Needless to say, it's relatively common.

Is this similar to what you're talking about?

Rob

Rob,

Should we be concerned that you knew that thread existed and were able to find it?

Wait, don't answer that.

😀
I just have an uncanny memory; that's all.

Weren't you the guy who had a thing for the Olympus a70 or something like that?

😉

Nope, it was the Canon C-4000 😉

A tonsiloth? That sounds like a mythical beast. Like their archenemies were the centaurs or something.

Seriously - THANK YOU. Now I have a name to work with...

And no! No pics... too stinky and unsightly.

I didn't spell it right, tonsiloliths is the correct spelling.

Google brings up lots of info.

See the ENT.

Finally! now i know what these damn things are... i get em too, dont get em often enough to tell people about em...

just outta curiosity, where are tonsils located?

My friend had this problem and he had surgury + tonsil removal. It was nasty and he was spitting up skin and blood for a week but he hasn't complained since.

They're the two lumps of flesh on each side of your throat.

My 5th grade teacher had it and had to get surgery. She drank a lot of soda though so that was where it was rumored to have come from.

I get this often too. I could never pick them out before. Now when I feel them I can just go in with an sharp object, usually a hook like device and take them out. It's nasty as hell and they do stink.
