Health Insurance Q:

1 month ago I had pleurisy -- I went to an urgent care twice for it. It's gone now, pretty much.

I'm applying for insurance w/ a popular insurer (which I'll keep out of this as I'm a paranoid bastard), as I'm a student still and only have an internship that doesn't include insurance.

I indicated that the condition is gone on my application -- do you think they'll note it as a 'preexisting condition' and not cover it if it flares up again?

It's kinda worrying me, because supposedly pleurisy can come back, and man, it hurt like mad...

To my understanding, if they accept you for full health coverage, they'll cover all conditions including ones you were treated for before switching plans. You'll probably be paying a bit more though.

Then again, I'm no expert, so my advice is just to call and ask.

No they will not cover it. As I have said before there are two reason why insurance companies are in business. (1) Collect the premium and (2) Deny your claim.

OP, before you apply, just give them a call and ask. Get the name of the person you talk to (and maybe even record the conversation if you're that worried about it) so incase there's a problem in the future, you'll have your back covered.

Yeah, that's probably the best course of action.

If you have been treated for something in the past 6 months, and didn't have insurance, it is a pre-existing condition.
I used to underwrite health insurance for 4 years.

Oh, and with the new coverage, if you go 6 months without getting treated for that condition, and go in for it, you are fine. It's the 6 month window you need to pay attention to.

Yep. If they could get away with it they wouldn't cover illness. :disgust:
