Health insurance+Domestic Partner?

My wife and I have been discussing consolidating our health plans. I work for the Army as a civilian and she works for Target. Her plan looks to be much better than mine for a family. Anyway, I was just looking over the information and noticed that there is a plan for Target Employee + Spouse/Domestic Partner and it's marketed as being NEW. Are more corporations doing this? I find it interesting that a major corporation would do this when it seems the rest of the government and society are up in arms about it. If companies start permitting this, will it force the hand of government to change? Seems very progressive to me. Is Target ahead of the rest of corporate America with this?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. This could be P&N I suppose, but I don't want to hear all the rhetoric and ignorance that pervades that area. 😉

disney started offering benefits to 'domestic partners' years ago, iirc. i don't think company policy will force the government to change.
 
I'd be willing to bet Target probably got sued or threatened by somebody with some decent legal clout, forcing them to change their policies. I can't see Target changing their policy out of simple good will, being that they're a massive corporation.

Then again, I could just be a cynical bastard. 😛

In any case, I doubt the gummint is going to change their stance any time soon on this issue, given that the religious right would have a collective heart attack over the thought of that happening.
 
Funny thing: My firm, and we are nationwide with an office in every big city, only offered a Same Sex domestic partner plan.

After putting in my GF of 6yrs at the time for just dental insurance I got a call from our national HR department asking me why my sames sex domestic partner was a female. Well after casually talking about it for a few minutes, they said no problem.


I think most big companies offer this now.

it's not just gay people. they can't discriminate, it applies to opposite sex domestic partners too. i live with my fiancee and she's covered under my insurance as a result.
