I'm pretty pissed off. How come over half of working Americans are getting their health insurance subsidized by the slightly less than half Americans who don't get health insurance from their employers?

What happened to any semblence of fairness? Its an outrage! Why are poorer Americans subsidizing health insurance for those better off?

Isn't it time we demand that those people who have gotten a huge tax break for years be made to give some of the money back to those who have been literally dying to subsidize people who can easily afford to pay for their own health insurance?

The real question is not that we are going to give money to poor working people to buy health insurance, but why are we forcing the poor to subsidize the health insurance for the rich?

Forcing poorer workers to pay taxes on money they spend to buy health insurance to subsidize rich workers who get it from their employers is institutionalized murder.

I'm sorry. Do people not know that health insurance paid for by your employer is not taxed, while people who pay for their own health insurance are taxed?

Or that the Affordable Health Care Act provision to subsidize those who work but can't afford health insurance is only partially reimbursing those who are subsidizing other workers health insurance?

Perhaps you could explain how the 1/2 of American's who pay 0 or negative federal income tax are subsidizing the rich through their taxes?

If you are talking about the poor who actually pay taxes, then you have to take this into account as well.

Itemized Deduction Eligibility

  • Healthcare deductions are an itemized deduction.

AGI Eligibility

  • Your ability to deduct healthcare premiums also depends on your Adjusted Gross Income, AGI, which is your net income minus certain deductions listed on Form 1040. If you aren't self employed, only healthcare expenses that exceed 7.5 percent of your AGI are deductible from your income taxes.

Techs is absolutely right in this case. I wish the ACA would've ended that.

If they had eliminated the tax break they could have paid for every American to have health care. And still had money left over.

What qualifies as poor? From what I understand, poor people get medicaid. Those who are under 133% of the poverty line are exempt from the mandate. Please clarify...

Well those making below 88,000 get government subsidizes under ACA. And >250,000 is considered rich

So I guess poor would be from 88,001 - 249,999

Yep, that is exactly what I mean. If you pay for your own health insurance you can't deduct it until it hits 7.5 percent of your income.

Do you not realize that those who pay the health insurance themselves outside of the employer can deduct that cost from their taxes after the 7.5% mark TOTAL for all medical expenses. those who are self employed can take the medical off the top

So when you see the MD for little Tech's scrape - that is deductible also after the 7.5% TOTAL mark. Include your mileage to get to the MDs also.

Outrage not found.

Of course you know that those that do not have employer based insurance can leverage the $7500 dollar per year deductible on their taxes for health care costs right? Oh wait.. under the ACA that rises to $10k....So yeah.. you get some perks but ACA makes it worse. WTG Team Obama.

What you don't get is that the salary+ benefits is considered as part of your overall compensation package by an employer. The tax benefit was there to encourage workers to sign up for the plans and to help them with out of pocket medical costs. So you want to remove the incentive for them to actually sign up for an employer's health plan? Somewhat defeats your complaint.

So you want to take that away from the "rich" guy making 50k a year and feeding a family of four? You are sadly misinformed.

A poor person will easily pay more than 7.5% of their income on health insurance. But I agree, all healthcare expenses should be deductable.

But that would be a tax increase on everyone...Obama would NEVER do that? (hides the ACA)

Just playing devil's advocate here: why? Why should healthcare expenses be tax deductible, but not rent, food, clothes, utilities, gym membership, car, gas, or anything else?

As previously stated, it was deductible for the employer as an incentive to get coverage for the employee.

Then expanded to the self-employed.
Then a decision was made by Congress to allow the write off of health care over the 7.5% (considered the catastrophic level)

Built from good intentions.

Rent is already deductible as the building to the owner - can not allow double dipping.
Food exists as a deduction for justifiable business expense use (50%) - go out to lunch with a co-worker and it is deducible as long as you talk shop.
clothes are deductible if not usable for general public daily wear.
Utilities are deductible as a business expense against business income
Gym memberships are deductible as a business gift only.
Vehicles are deducible for business use, health care expenses or second job as well as charity.
Fuel can be deducible a well as oil/maintenance if you do not use the mileage option.
Must ties into the vehicle usages

Well, it was based on a Republican plan after all....

IIRC they passed what they could get votes for, not what was originally wanted.
