This is probably my first post ever in P&N but I'm just taking a step back here

Suppose you have no idea about partisanship, left wing, right wing, fox news vs msnbc, whatever

If I was still wet behind the ears and I was given these options (and please, let me know if I'm wrong, I will readily admit I'm no expert in how healthcare works right now), I think I would pick D.

A. Do you plan on getting sick? injured? anyone in your family also have no plans of such things? if so, pay no dollars and you and your family die when such a thing happens
B. Are you employed? if so, does your employer like the idea of you being alive? well maybe they'll help you pay for some health insurance but you still have to pay a bunch a month, whether shit happens or not, especially if you have a family you care about being still alive
C. Are you unemployed, homeless, an illegal immigrant, or make a shit living, but still plan on getting hurt, sick, etc.? if so, how do you plan to pay for it? Oh, let those who are paying out their ass for insurance subsidize your uninsured ass at the hospital that results in skyrocketing healthcare costs for everyone? well ok, it's worked so far, right?
D. Are you unemployed, homeless, poor, an illegal immigrant, or employed but unhappy with the options your company gives for healthcare? well here's the government healthcare plan that costs X, and if you don't plan on paying X then we fine you to prevent C. from ever happening again

or am i completely out of the loop?

D would be pretty nice.

C is what congress just passed.

anything that would have disturbed private insurance company's monopolies in certain areas got stripped out, right?

Really? I thought C. was how it already was... how is what they just passed different than the current situation and why is it costing more money from the private sector?

My first post in this forum too. ;)

You forgot E...

E. Originally in the B category, but will drop all coverage and suckle on the nipple until we bankrupt the system, gladly paying the "fine" since its far less expensive that buying insurance.

Um. You could have gone out and bought your own plan at any given time. Nothing was stopping you form doing that.

IIRC, the fine is considerably less than the insurance payments. So there will probably be a lot of folks who will simply wait until they need health insurance, before they pay for it.

I'm pretty sure you can't do this. If you get cancer, which happens to about 20% of people, then your cancer will either be listed as a pre-existing condition or you'll be flat out rejected from all medical coverage.

They will not be able to deny you coverage, under the new rules, for a pre-existing condition. Nor will they be able to deny you coverage altogether. Health care is now guaranteed for all.

People will be able to wait until they get sick, and then sign up, if it will cost them less to do so. And it looks like it will.

I'm not sure, but I think they would also be able to opt back out again when they are healthy again.

I still fail to see any verbiage whatsoever in this bill about them creating a new plan.
